Everybody loves music. It’s a way to express yourself and what’s on your mind. Music is a way to illustrate what you’re feeling inside. It’s something that can either change your mood or can connect with the current mood you’re feeling. With the multitudes of genres- rap, hip hop, pop, classical- you may find yourself favoring a specific style of song. You may find yourself like me, a floater in music. I can go from “Real Slim Shady” by Eminem to the John Rutter Requiem, and in the middle of all that I find myself listening to country music.
Now, Garth Brooks is definitely a great musician and someone who should be bowed down to, and don’t get me wrong that big names like Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, and Keith Urban are incredible, but for someone like me, their music doesn’t always connect with me the way some other songs might, especially when it comes to love songs. I call myself a fake country fan, someone who enjoys the low-key and slight country style songs about love and relationships.
Of course, songs like “Friends In Low Places” or “Like My Dog” by Billy Currington have a great sound and vibe to them, but for the people that are like me, you know and understand that country love songs top everything. And so, I decided to make a list of 5 low-key country love songs that really get me in a country feel, even if it’s not very country-esque.
1. "Suitcase" - Hunter Hayes
“So baby, let’s get away, and make our escape…”
This song is a true bop from a very talented (and super cute) “country” star. Hunter Hayes truly makes your heart sing when you listen to this song. The lyrics are relatable (especially if you have green eyes and the love of your life by your side), catchy, and overall something that’s able to be put on repeat for the entire day.
2. "In Case You Didn’t Know" - Brett Young
“You had my heart a long long time ago, in case you didn’t know...”
This sad love song has a more country vibe than one may think. Brett Young has a beautiful voice and pours his soul into this song. The song, all about the things someone may not be able to tell or express often to their significant other, has an almost uplifting sadness to it. It makes one realize that the one you love loves you right back, even if one may be unable to see so. This is definitely a song that will make you love someone even more, or cry and eat ice cream in your bed. Either or, both will be a good time if you listen to this song.
3. "What If I Stay" - Chris Young
“But you’re giving me that look baby, that says you’re up to no good maybe…”
I have all the love in the world for this song for an abundance of reasons, but mainly because of the illustration of a new and pure love. The fact that Chris Young can make someone truly see everything happening and all the love that is present through his voice is really a treat for the ears. As a sucker for love, my heart feels whole when listening to this song because you really can hear the true love and happiness within the story of this song.
4. "If I Told You" - Darius Rucker
“If I told you the mess that I could be, when there’s one one there to see, would you look the other way, would you love me anyway?”
This song hits you right in the feels. Darius Rucker sings about the opening up stage in a relationship. While this stage in a relationship is important anyway, Darius Rucker is able to put the moment into a song that really digs deep into your heart. You hear the love he feels for the one he is talking about, and along with that you feel the pain he does when asking if they will love him anyway. It’s a song that you can relate to and feel for, and something that truly connects one to their past and whoever stands in front of their future.
5. "Sleep Without You" - Brett Young
“Never thought I would be like this, Wide awake waiting on a good night kiss…”
Yes, another song from Brett Young has made it on this list because he is just that good. This song is another bop and a great song to jam out to while you’re walking to class or alone in your dorm room. Its catchy beat will make you shake your hips and move around and the lyrics will stick in your head and make you want to sing out loud. The point of the song is loving someone, and when listening to this song you’re going to want to do just that. Listen to this song and you’ll feel warm with love and happiness for whoever may be in your life.
Music is such an important aspect of life, and no matter the genre, style, or sound that you like to listen to, you can always find something to connect with. A big thank you to the friend that truly introduced me to country, the real stuff and the stuff like this. Without you, I wouldn’t have found a new connection with these songs. Find your connection to music, whether it’s these five songs or a completely different style. No matter what you vibe to, enjoy it.
