Every other week, I host a writer's party. We talk about books that we love and what we are writing. On one occasion, my friend, Natalie, brought in a children's book to share with everyone. That night, Natalie reminded us of a very important fact: Children's books are for all ages and are to be treasured even while we are in college.
1. "The Fat Cat Sat on the Mat" by Nurit Karlin
During the writer's party, a small group of college students gathered around a table to listen to a dramatic reading of "The Fat Cat Sat on the Mat." By the end of the book, our sides were splitting with laughter. It was such a stressful week, yet the simple humor in the book reminded us to laugh.
2. "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak
“And the walls became the world all around.” This book reminds us to use our imagination, and that it is ok to be lonely. Max goes on an adventure to where the wild things are and later comes back because he misses his mom. Sometimes, it feels like we are "where the wild things are" in college, and we just want to go home and eat soup with our moms.
3. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle
As college students, we are just like the caterpillar in this story. All we really want to do is eat, sleep and repeat. We don't always wake up as butterflies, but perhaps we will be like butterflies when we graduate.
4. "Goodnight Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown
There are times in life when even sleeping is difficult. Reading a book about a bunny saying goodnight to everything can be very calming. Instead of thinking, "Goodnight papers, goodnight exams and goodnight worries everywhere," listen to the words of the sweet little bunny that is saying, “Goodnight stars, goodnight air, goodnight noises everywhere.”
5. "The Little Engine that Could" by Watty Piper
"I think I can, I think I can, I think I can." Just keep that mantra in your head as you see the mountain of projects piling up and the finals looming ahead of you. Remember, if that little engine could make it up that mountain, you can make it though college. I think you can, I think you can, I know you can!
College is hard. Take a minute to relax by reading some children's books. Sometimes, you just need to read a simple story that fills you with joy instead of the drudgery of textbooks.
Bonus books for your enjoyment:
"The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein is a timeless book that reminds you to be appreciative of those who have made sacrifices for your benefit, otherwise known as mom.
"If You Give a Pig a Pancake" by Laura Numeroff is hilarious, enough said.
"Corduroy" by Don Freeman is a wonderfully sweet story about a teddy bear. It also has some great lessons and reminders in the story.
"Oh The Place You'll Go!" by Dr. Seuss reminds us that when you get discouraged by the hardships of college just remember:
“Congratulations!Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!”
