Sometimes it seems as though it takes a special kind of person to become a Broadway Musical nerd. Perhaps it seems this way because I am one. As it turns out, it's not difficult to fall for many of the magnificent stories that grace the stages of the great white way. I've compiled a list of Broadway Musicals that I, personally, am dying to see. (Note: this list will not include Hamilton, a musical that everyone is dying to see.)
1. Waitress
This Sara Bareilles musical centers around Jenna, a waitress, who has a knack for making pies. Jenna is struggling to leave an abusive relationship, and this musical follows her journey as she finds her way to happiness.
2. Tuck Everlasting
Based on the novel by Natalie Babbit, Tuck Everlasting tells the story of an eleven year old girl, and the choices she must face surrounding life, death and immortality.
3. Avenue Q
This hilarious musical is an active commentary on popular culture. Designed to basically be Sesame Street for adults, this musical addresses controversial issues such as homosexuality, racism, and growing older. Though this show may be playing Off-Broadway now, it will always be on my list!
4. The Book of Mormon
...Speaking of hilarious, there's The Book Of Mormon. Created by the same people who brought us South Park, it is a uncensored commentary on religion.
5. Fun Home
Finally, the last on my list is an unconventional musical, Fun Home. It's unconventional in the sense that it is performed on a round, instead of a stage, so that the audience completely surrounds the actors as they are performing. It is also the first musical to feature and openly gay lead. Other than that, the music is incredible, and the true story of Allison Bechdel is endearing and inspiring.
