I love watching movies, and I will find any excuse or mood to watch them. Right now, I happen to be in the mood to watch movies that are sad, but still so good that it’s worth it. I know that I am not the only one that gets in this kind of mood, so here are my favorites:
*Majority of the movie descriptions are similar to those on movie sites, like Fandango or IMDb, there should be no spoilers below*
1. Seven Pounds
Starring Will Smith. This movie… I actually haven’t been able to watch it for such a long time, because it really takes you on an emotional journey. It is about a man named Ben Thomas who sets out on a mission to redeem himself from something in his past. He searches for seven strangers who deserve a second chance, and ends up falling in love with one of them along the way. He then has to decide whether or not he can continue his journey. Throughout the whole movie, you are captivated because nothing is really explained. You are constantly questioning why Ben is doing what he is doing, and when you will find out what his motives are. You only realize it is a heavy movie once it’s over, but it is SO good. Right now, you can find this movie on the FX Now App, just log in through your TV provider.
2. My Girl
I will admit, I had no idea what to expect when I first watched this movie. I expected it to be bright, cheery, and full of sunshine. This movie is not that. It is about a girl who is on the verge of becoming a teenager, and her life during that time- struggling with not having her mom during this transitional time, having a crush on her English teacher, and having adventures with her best friend. You expect this to be the typical coming of age movie, and in a way, it is. It just has a few unexpected turns that get you. Overall really great movie, and just to let you guys know, the sequel is not as good. This movie can be found on Netflix.
3. The Pursuit of Happyness
Another one starring Will Smith. He becomes a single father and is evicted from his apartment with his young son. The movie shows his journey of trying to get his life back on track. During this time, he takes an unpaid internship at a brokerage firm and has to bounce between homeless shelters with his son as he tries to create a better life for them. This movie is great and it goes through a process of hurting your heart, then making it happy again. This movie was unfortunately removed from Netflix at the end of august, but can be rented on ITunes or Amazon for $3.99.
4. The Choice
This is a Nicholas Sparks movie. Need I say more? The main characters include Travis, a ladies' man who thinks a serious relationship would cramp his easygoing lifestyle and Gabby, a feisty medical school student, who's preparing to settle down with her long-term boyfriend. Fate brings the two together as Gabby moves next door to Travis, sparking an irresistible attraction that upends both of their lives. As their bond grows, the unlikely couple must decide how far they're willing to go to keep the hope of love alive. This movie takes some “unexpected” turns, which should be expected given the fact that this is a Nicholas Sparks movie. However, there is one turn that one actually wouldn’t expect, given that same fact. This is by far my favorite Nicholas Sparks movie. It is a little sappy as usual, and I cried for sure. It can be rented on ITunes or amazon for $4.99, and seeing the trend for newer Nicholas sparks movies on Netflix, it’s bound to pop up on there sometime in the near future.
5. A Little Bit of Heaven
Stars Kate Hudson. Free-spirited Marley embraces her easy sexuality, shuns commitment, and gains support and strength from a close circle of friends. She learns she has terminal cancer and begins to fall in love with her doctor, despite her health, which is slowly declining. It’s a movie about a woman with cancer, so it’s obviously a sad movie. However, Marley’s bravery and attitude through it all, especially at the end is what makes you feel good. This movie is definitely one of my favorites, and it can be found on Netflix.
