One of the many perks of going to college in New York City is the plethora of food options that are offered at any hour of the day and night. If the munchies hit you at two in the morning, you need not to fret; the food culture in New York City has you covered. Whether you’re craving a humongous (think bigger than the size of your face) greasy slice of pizza after getting back from a night out on the town, or you need an intense sugar rush to get you through a night of studying, Morningside Heights will not disappoint in the food department. Scroll down to see five of the best late-night food options that will have you drooling and wishing it was midnight already!
1. Koronet Pizza
Nothing beats New York pizza, and luckily we’ve been blessed with the infamous Koronet Pizzeria right here in the neighborhood. This joint is the epitome of New York-style pizza with its gigantic cheesy slices that are affordably priced and very delicious. The pies are constantly coming out of the oven so you always get a fresh hot slice where the perfect combination of sauce and cheese melts in your mouth with every bite. Koronet is open seven days a week until the late hours of the night, and did we mention they also offer free delivery? It’s the perfect place to go to if you’re craving pizza (which should be all the time), and want to take a cute Instagram selfie with a slice of pizza that’s bigger than the size of your face.
2. Insomnia Cookies
Just the name of this place indicates that it has to be one of the best late-night food options. Insomnia will satisfy your late-night sugar craving with their many cookie options ranging from double chocolate chunk to snickerdoodle. And if a regular sized cookie just isn’t cutting it, you could try your favorite flavors in a deluxe cookie size. Download the Insomnia Cookies app on your phone and someone will rollerblade your order of deliciously warm cookies right to your building. Also pair your Insomnia cookies with a cold glass of milk and some friends, and your night just got better than ever.
3. Tom's Diner
A 24-hour diner on the weekends. What more can you ask for? Not only is Tom’s Diner famous around Morningside Heights for it’s role in the sitcom, "Seinfeld," it also has the best chicken finger and fries ever (at least in my opinion). This laid-back, quick-service diner is a popular choice among Barnard students because the menu offers every late-night food choice you can think of. Craving a burger? You can get a burger at Tom’s. Craving a gyro? You can get one at Tom’s. Craving breakfast at 3:00 a.m.? You can get that too. Tom’s Diner is always packed with Barnard students, so while you’re eating away you’ll be sure to bond with some fellow classmates.
4. Ham Del a.k.a. Hamilton Deli
Ham Del is a sandwich shop located on Amsterdam Avenue that offers signature hero sandwiches that are fresh and made any way you want it. These sandwiches aren’t your ordinary deli sandwiches and instead are made until they’re overflowing with toppings and have names that represent their yummy goodness. They deliver 24 hours so it’s a great option for your winter nights spent inside when the New York City weather is too cold to bear. Just a warning that choosing what sandwich you want might come with some difficulty because everything on the menu will have your mouth watering, but we’re not complaining. Also they make breakfast all day and everyone knows that breakfast at midnight tastes better than breakfast at any other hour of the day.
5. Halal Carts
You’ve definitely seen the little food carts surrounding campus that seem to never close. If you’re looking for a quick and cheap meal try out one of these typical NYC halal carts. Order chicken over rice or a falafel sandwich and pig out back in your dorm or enjoy your meal on Low steps while the campus is peaceful and quiet during the late hours of the night. Not only will you’ll feel like the ultimate New Yorker but you’ll also quickly satisfy your late-night hunger.
Morningside Heights has something for all of the night owls here at Barnard. Keep these places in mind the next time your stomach starts to growl during those late hours of the night.
