An only child is a person with no siblings whatsoever. Even though it is very rare to meet someone who is an only child, the stereotypes are not so rare. As an only child, I have heard all of these stereotypes and have had people ask me all these obnoxious questions. Here are my honest and true answers to all the annoying questions I get asked when people find out I am an only child.
1. “Did you ever feel alone growing up?”
Just because I don’t have any siblings doesn’t mean I don’t the ability to make friends. Only children are comfortable with being alone, and we are able to keep ourselves occupied without being entirely dependent on other people our age. I promise being alone is not as boring as it seems to be.
2. “Did your parents spoil you?”
Just because I’m an only child doesn’t mean I get everything I want. My parents are some what strict and have never given me every single thing I have asked for. I have had to earn everything my parents have given me. They don’t just hand me everything I want on a silver platter! My parents worked extra hard not to excessively spoil me just for the mere fact that they didn’t want me to be another stereotype.
3. “Do you have trouble sharing?”
Contrary to what everyone believes, not all only children are selfish or don’t know how to share. I learned how to share just like everyone else did except I learned it from my private daycare that I went to every day since I was 6 weeks old. The only thing I don’t like to share is food.
4. “Aww, you’re an only child! Did your parents have trouble with conception?”
Um, my parent’s sex life is none of your business, but no they did not have trouble with conception. I’m just so fabulous that they decided that I was all they needed and then some.
5. “Do you always have to have your way?”
Why is this a stereotype for only children? Doesn’t everyone want to have things their way? I’m not going to have a meltdown if things don’t go my way. My parents taught me how to be flexible and that I can’t always have everything my way.
Are you guilty of asking these questions? If you are, it's okay just remember the next time you hear someone say they are an only child, just smile and say,"Only Children are awesome!"
