Even though they are mostly working behind the scenes, we should acknowledge and give credit to the originators behind these films and T.V shows. Here is a list of five African Americans that have paved the way into the film industry with scriptwriting and directing.
Shonda Rhimes:

Lee Daniels:
Lee Daniels is known to be the co-creator of his T.V show "Empire" which has over 17 million viewers. Daniels began his career as a receptionist at an agency in California. He then got promoted to a casting manager and director, and then to a producer. His first big project was producing the movie "Monster’s Ball" and later, the movie "The Woodsman." His notable works include both writing and producing the movies "Precious" and "The Butler."
Spike Lee:
Spike Lee’s movies are known for controversy and exposing the African American community. He is most known for his movies "Do the Right Thing," "Malcolm X," and "School Daze." He has written, produced, directed, acted in over eight of his films. He has won numerous awards including an Academy Honorary Award, the Ossie Davis Award and a BAFTA award.
Ava Duvernay:
Ava Duvernay is a screenwriter and director. She is known for writing and directing the movie "Selma," which was nominated for many awards. She is the director and writer for many documentaries and films including "My Mic Sounds Nice," "Faith through the Storm," "This is my Life" and "Middle of Nowhere."
Gina Prince Bythewood:
Gina Prince-Bythewood is known for writing the movie popular African American romance movie "Love & Basketball." She started out working as a T.V writer for shows "A Different World" and "South Central." She is also known for directing the movie "Beyond the Lights" and "The Secret Life of Bees."
