Wisconsin is one of a kind when it comes to summer. A July 4th holiday isn't the same anywhere else. From the people to the food to the weather, July 4th in Wisconsin is truly the best. Here are eight reasons why Wisconsin is the best state to celebrate the day:
1. The Lakes and Rivers.
Whether you’re Shaking the Lake in Madison, watching fireworks bursting over the Mississippi in La Crosse, or way up at Bayfields 4th of July Fest on Lake Superior, firework displays all over the state reflect over the waters of Wisconsin with mesmerizing colors. Whether you’re a shore watcher or a viewing afloat, this day, Wisconsin is a beauty on the lakes and rivers.
2. Baseball.
Yes, it might be a cliché American pastime on the July 4, but haven’t you figured out that this is literally one big cliché, American holiday? But hey, there is nothing wrong with that. Grab a mitt, a ball, a bat and a hat and gather up the ole’ sandlot crew. You can bet that baseball will be played or, of course, watched if the Brew Crew are taking the field that day.
3. Up North.
Every Wisconsinite must experience this day Up North at some point in their life. Scratch that. Every American must experience a July 4 Up North in Wisconsin. I am capitalizing Up North on purpose. It is not just a place, it’s a culture, a lifestyle, an experience all in itself. A place to escape to all year round with boating, hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, snowmobiling and everything you can imagine outdoors. No doubt, it will be packed on the fourth and those people be soaking up some sun on the water during the day and around a campfire when the sun starts to sink. Marshmallows, sparklers, snappers, bomb pops and firefly catching is all a given when you spend a July holiday Up North.
4. Beer.
From Miller Lite to Leinenkugels to New Glarus to the crafts. Wisconsin proudly holds up a cup of a cold brew and toasts the date of July 4. Beer Pong. Flip Cup. Quarters. Beersbee. You name it. Someone’s playing it. Recreational or social or flat out just because its fourth. Wisconsin will be drinking a few beers and sharing some with you.
5. Brats Burgers and Fish.
The food is the center of it all. It wouldn’t be a Wisconsin summer holiday if there weren’t brats. Burgers are a given, and depending on where you choose to do you’re celebrating, there might be a couple of freshly caught fish making their way to the grill. So grab the buns, the ketchup, the potato salad, because you’ll be stuffing your face from the buffet picnic table with no shame at all.
6. The Weather.
Every state claims to have “unpredictable weather." I believe Wisconsin takes the cake. Don’t let a thunderstorm forecast keep you from planning an unforgatable day because we all know that by the time you want to start the grill, there will be nothing but sunshine and blue skies.
7. Firework Tents.
I am yet to understand why on every corner it seems like there are firework tents set up selling everything from fireworks to sparklers to bottle rockets and everything of the like. We all know it is illegal to launch them in the state…but we all know we do it anyways.
8. The People.
When I was younger, July 4 was a holiday for everyone. The block of my neighborhood was packed with all my friends, their parents, their parents’ parents and everyone’s friends. Everyone gathers for a good time and it doesn’t matter who you are. Just as long as you come for a good time.
