40 Thoughts That Go Through Your Head Before You Go Abroad

There is a point in time in which you have completed your application phase of your study abroad journey, and move to the worst stage, the waiting stage. The stage in which you have to wait, plan, think, and say goodbyes. The stage in which you are not ready to go at all, but are somehow ready to leave at a moments notice.

  1. Alright, I'm actually doing this...
  2. There's no need to stress about this, everything from here on out is simple.
  3. Move halfway around the world for a semester? I can do that, I'm used to not being at home for months at a time now.
  4. I know enough of the language to get by.
  5. Alright, I know how to say 'hello' and 'bathroom' so at least I have those two priorities down.
  6. Google Translate, you are going to be my new best friend while I'm abroad.
  7. Classes or trips, classes or trips?
  8. Taking the bare minimum of classes seems like a good idea.
  9. Let's make sure these classes are all pretty simple too. I don't want to be too over stressed.
  10. I wonder how their currency is holding up to the dollar?
  11. Well the dollar is still low, but it's not as low as it has been.
  12. Maybe I should tell my friends that I am going abroad.
  13. They'll be so excited.
  14. ...Nope, they are sad, maybe even more sad than the parents.
  15. Haa, they are joking about how they will not let me leave, that's so sweet.
  16. ...where did they get that rope from so quickly?
  17. I'm not liking the looks of this.
  18. Maybe it's best that I go now before this gets out of hand
  19. Yup, they have duct tape... Well look at the time, best I be leaving.
  20. How long have they been practicing talking in unison?
  21. Oh well that's odd, how did this door get locked, it was just open.
  22. Window? Window it is.
  23. I've thought about more places I want to go than what classes I want to take.
  24. It's 2015, why do I need a new phone?
  25. How are calling cards still a thing?
  26. 50 Cent is bankrupt and calling cards still exist, I do not believe this one bit.
  27. There's gotta be an app for abroad, there's an app for everything,
  28. I'll finally be able to drink legally!
  29. ...and then come back and not be able to drink legally.
  30. How many American flag covered clothes can I bring over there?
  31. Six articles of clothes seems like a reasonable number.
  32. I should really contact all my friends who went abroad and get some tips from them.
  33. By tips I basically mean a conversation/lecture that has taught me so much that it should be counted as a summer course.
  34. There is a surprising amount of articles online about where I am going by others who have studied abroad there.
  35. So Pinterest is basically information about studying abroad, recipes, and fashion?
  36. No one needs to know I'm on that.
  37. Cannot wait to meet my host mom.
  38. Wait, where am I living when I get back stateside?
  39. Eh, that is future me's problem.
  40. Can I just go finally?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
