I read an article the other day (that I thought was ineffective) listing 40 skills that girls need to know before they turn 19. It contained many stereotypes that several girls might not do, like putting on makeup. So, I wanted to create my own comprehensive list of 40 things I want to be able to do in three years when I’m 20.
- Change a tire, if she has a car.
- Wash and load the dishes.
- Study effectively, if she is a student.
- Not care about other people’s opinions when it comes to her lifestyle.
- Listen to and follow constructive criticism.
- Effectively grocery shop for her price range and health needs.
- Be eco-friendly, if she can afford to.
- Stand up for herself and what she believes in.
- Be conscious of what she buys,
- But treat herself to something at least once a month, if she can.
- Have confidence in herself.
- Love the body she’s in,
- And if not, slowly establish a plan to love herself.
- Have the courage to de-friend those who take advantage of her, neglect her, and use her.
- Reconnect with past classmates or family members, if she wants to.
- Accomplish at least 3 things from her bucket list.
- Learn how to cook her favorite meal.
- Learn how to bake her favorite dessert.
- Not be ashamed of her preference of TV shows, movies, books, music, etc.
- Find a short, fun daily activity such as meditation or a crossword.
- Drive a manual vehicle.
- Know it is okay to show emotion in front of others.
- Give back to her community, state, or world, in ways big or small.
- Pick out or make a heartfelt gift.
- Realize when she’s reached her limit mentally, physically, and emotionally.
- Safely drink or do drugs, if she chooses to.
- Take care of her skin and body, if she finds it important.
- Realize when she needs to go to the doctor.
- Get screened for breast (or any other type of) cancer.
- Make gynecologist appointments.
- Know when it’s appropriate to be on her phone versus when it’s not.
- Defend herself in case of an attack, car hijacking, kidnapping, etc.
- End a bad relationship.
- Create a successful resume.
- Ace an interview.
- Have fun by herself.
- Give basic first aid.
- Use tools such as a drill, wrench, hammer, etc.
- Say no when she is uncomfortable.
- Ask for help when she needs it.
