While summer is still a few months away, now is a good time to start thinking about summer plans. If you're planning to travel abroad, here are a few tips to help save money.
1. Book flights well in advance.
We all know that tickets get more expensive as you get closer to your flight date. According to CheapAir, prices for international flights start to go up 90 days before departure. Apps like Hopper and Skiplagged can help you pick the best time to book and travel.
2. Exchange currency before you leave home.
Exchanging money at your home bank before traveling abroad can help avoid a lot of unnecessary stress when you land. It can save you from having to look for money for transportation from the airport and thereby avoid the exorbitant fees that airports and hotels charge for currency exchange. Many banks nowadays also charge little to no fees for using debit or credit cards abroad, but if you run out of cash, try to withdraw larger amounts at a branch ATM in order to avoid paying transaction fees each time.
3. Pack one suitcase inside another.
This is a great tip if you plan on shopping while abroad or in case you buy much more than you expected. Most international flights allow you to check one bag free, so if you pack a carry-on bag inside the suitcase, you could bring both pieces back at no extra charge.
4. Participate in a Workaway program.
If you want to stay abroad long-term without paying for housing and/or meals, this is a great option. Programs such as the ones on Workaway and HelpX provide you with room and board with a family, in exchange for part-time work (hours vary, but generally run between 15-20 hours/week). This is also a fun way to experience living like a local, as well as an opportunity to learn about the culture and language.
