New pop songs are as much of a summer staple as denim cutoffs and soft-served ice cream. But lately a new sound has been dominating the airwaves. From Lorde to Marina and the Diamonds, today’s Princesses of Pop seem to have a bit more of an edge. Their songs combine hip-hop-infused beats with dark, witty lyrics and just the right amount of bubblegum sweetness that has us all reaching for the repeat button. So if you’re looking to spice up your summer playlist, I definitely suggest checking out a few of these talented ladies!

2. MS MR – "How Does It Feel"

MS MR is an alternative duo from New York whose songs have been featured all over TV from "Pretty Little Liars" to "Game of Thrones." Vocalist Lizzy Plapinger's dreamy sound has often been compared to that of Florence and the Machine, and for their new album the pair seems to have embraced a more up-tempo, dancy vibe that’s perfect for grooving with the top down on a summer road trip.
3. Halsey - "Badlands"Release Date: August 28th, 2015
Blue-haired, 20-year-old crooner Halsey began her career posting covers on YouTube. She later gained national attention with the release of original song “Ghost,” a catchy ballad that combines an ethereal chorus with rap-influenced verses. After touring with the Kooks last summer, Halsey is now set to release her first album this August which she describes in an interview as being a very “feminist record.”
4. Melanie Martinez – "Cry Baby"
Release Date: August 14th, 2015
Martinez got her shot at fame at only 17 years old when she placed 6th on the NBC reality show “The Voice” in 2012. Since then she has released an original EP titled "Dollhouse" that combined her soft, chilling vocals with a selection of whimsically morbid pop tracks. And judging from the recently released single “Pity Party,” Melanie’s first full-length album will feature more of her signature dark humor and playful beats.
