To be honest, I would like to think of myself as more of a classic style type of gal. Purchasing something that will be in style for more than a year seems more logical to me than buying new clothes every month to fit in with the newest style.
But recently, I have really been digging these new trends.
Whoever in the fashion world is coming up with these fab new fads needs to be awarded a medal, in my personal opinion. These trends start with large doses of '70s fashion coming up from the ashes, with hints of Victorian elegance making a comeback as well.
These trends make my leggings-and-sweatshirt college attire's heart skip a beat at just how impeccable they are.
Feast your eyes, and prepare to be amazed.
1. Denim on Denim
Olivia Pemberton
This trend is not new to the public. People have been trying to pull off denim on denim since Brittany and Justin made their terror-ific debut in the early 2000s. In 2016, we've finally got it right. It's all about using different hues and silhouettes to make this look. When pairing denim, always go for a light wash against a dark wash. The contrast will make the look more subtle and less harsh, and help you not feel like you're wearing a pair of overalls. Also, make sure to emphasize either your top or your bottom. Pair a dark wash skinny jean with a medium to light wash oversized chambray button up. Take that acid wash pair of boyfriend jeans, and wear it with a dark wash tank tucked in, separated with simple thin belt.
2. Suede
Millie Mackintosh
Ah yes, another '70s trend. Suede is one of the most versatile fabrics in the fashion industry, in my opinion. Bags, shoes, skirts, dresses, jackets, shirts: the list goes on and on. A suede skirt is a great staple piece to have in your wardrobe for these upcoming spring months. It is a great way to transition your outfit from winter to spring by wearing a sheer long sleeve top and a strappy bright colored heel instead of a sweater and boots. For the hotter summer months, invest in a soft suede mini dress. The softer material won't make you sweat in the sweltering heat of the summer, and paired with a simple yet chic pair of sandals, it's an outfit to be reckoned with.
3. Ruffles
Cate Blanchett
My first thought when I hear the word "ruffle" is a terribly sad bridesmaids dress. But alas, a new dawn of ruffles is among us. A more subtle, wave affect is the new crimped, mermaid style that we are all sadly too familiar with. Not only does this style give any look an elegant, romantic feel, but it also adds a playful element to any outfit. A ruffled button up blouse looks classically chic when paired with a black pant and a pair of leopard print flats.
4. The White Shirt
Blake Lively
Guess what? That white oxford that hangs in your closet for dressing professional (which, let's be honest, never happens) has just became your best friend! This "trend" is less trend and more classic, but in the upcoming spring months it's revitalizing itself into the most-worn piece in your closet. If your white shirt is on the larger side, wear it as a dress! With a statement necklace and bold stilettos, you'll kill the fashion game. If you're not feeling too fancy, tying the bottom half into a loose knot and pairing it with your favorite dark wash boyfriend jeans will give you a beachy, "I'm here to relax," type of look. Pair with either a neutral sandal, or even a bold colored flat to add some color variety.
These trends are near and dear to my heart, and I hope that after reading this you'll love them just as much.
