Disney Channel has put out some great work, and I think most of us can agree that Sister Sister falls into that category. Considering this show was one of my very favorites, I might be a little biased, but, hey, what's good is good. It's a show that took me through the lives of twins from their early teen years into college. It was six years of shushing my brothers until commercial breaks and yelling "Go home, Roger!" into the living room. The show also taught me a few things that have turned out to be pretty useful. Here are four of them.
1. I'm allowed to be confident.
Sometimes I get in a place where I need permission to be kind to myself. I have to tell myself that I'm allowed to feel the things that other people see in me. I'm allowed to say that I'm an awesome person without fear of sounding conceited because I am. Confidence is something that is taken away from too many girls, but this show didn't let that happen.
2. I don't have to be polite to annoying, persistent guys.
I appreciate Sister Sister because Tia and Tamera never once said, "Sorry, I have a boyfriend" because men respect other men more than the woman they're harassing. I appreciate that the show never had them apologize for being uncomfortable or for being in the right.
3. I'm not my sisters.
Sometimes people (I'm lookin' at you, Grandma) compare me to my sisters. I mean, I get it. They're older than me, so I guess it's only natural for people to compare my experiences, my looks, my personality to theirs. But I'm not my sisters. We might look alike, but we're pretty different, which should be celebrated, not ignored.
4. Decisions are tough all around.
Which classes am I taking this semester? What am I having for dinner? Both important questions in college.
Thanks, Disney, for this original. I will never stop loving these twins.
