Last night I went to see the movie Collateral Beauty, ya know the one with Will Smith who talks to death, love, and time after the death of his young daughter? I was fully expecting to cry the entire way through, and my prediction was right; however, I ended up taking some things away from this film that stretch far beyond a headache from the tears.
Here are things I learned:
1. There will be times you want to just get up and leave.
Get on a plane, bus, train. Anything. The mode of transportation doesn't matter, sometimes we just want to drop everything and go. Sometimes it's necessary to start over But it's important to remember all the things we would be leaving if we go. Friends, family, loved ones, aspirations, and dreams are all things we are constantly experiencing throughout life. Remember those things.
2. Everyone is going through something.
Every person is unique, and in turn, so is each situation that occurs in a person's life. Everyone is going through something different which is why it is so crucial to always try to be kind to others. You never know if your kindness could turn an already awful day into a not so bad one. A simple smile could be the difference.
3. Love and friendship can conquer just about anything.
The power of love and friendship is a profound thing. It has the opportunity to conquer anything in its way. Have faith and trust in your loved ones, and perhaps they can pull you out of a difficult situation in life.
4. Collateral beauty is present in all things.
Time, love, and death. Like Will Smith says in the movie, "we long for love, we wish we had more time, and we fear death." These are three nouns that have so much meaning. And it is that meaning that adds up to one thing. The collateral beauty. Even if things seem totally screwed up at the moment, the beauty can be found. Often times, it is the most difficult, and draining experiences that bring about the most collateral beauty. All you have to do is look for it.
"Just be sure to notice the collateral beauty. It is the profound connection to everything."
