Experiencing college as an art major or minor is an odd experience, to say the least. People outside of the art world are usually really curious but totally oblivious to your life. And it doesn't help that you have to lug around a bunch of crap every day, prompting strange questions from everyone you run into. Here are some things I get asked almost every day as an art minor.
1. What's that toolbox you're carrying?
To be fair, my art box does look a lot like a tackle or toolbox, so I understand this one. And in a way, they are tools, since they are essential for my craft. But it can get annoying when people are constantly asking about what I have in my art box and what I use everything for.
To be honest, most of the items I only use a couple of times a semester, like my huge box cutter and hot glue guns. But I like to be prepared for anything, which means having a very large collection.
2. So you make cartoons?

This is more specific to me since the focus of my minor is illustration. To most people, that immediately means cartooning, and every time I mention my illustration classes, people begin to ask if I like making comics or creating cartoons. I do, but that isn't all I do. Illustration is more about mastering 2-D design and mark making. However, I do enjoy a quick doodle every now and then, and I definitely skim through the comics whenever I pick up a newspaper.
3. Why study art if it makes no money?
I have two issues with this question. First, art students can end up making a lot of money if they can score good commissions or book a lot of gallery shows. They can also become art professors and teachers and make a good living. Second, most artists don't care about money.
It's about following your passion and doing what you love to do the rest of your life: make art. Most artists are totally content being cooped up in a grungy studio somewhere with nothing but instant Ramen and a bunch of art supplies.
4. Can you make me something?

Sure! But you'll have to be more specific. I've been highly trained in drawing, painting, photography, 2-D design, 3-D design, and sculpture. So as long as you have a specific request, I'm sure I could whip something up. Most people only think of drawing and painting when they think of art, but there's so much more to it.
Yes, many artists specialize in drawing and painting, but an artist can also be a potter, sculptor, designer, photographer, and so many things between.
Next time you talk to an art student, keep these things in mind. Artists tend to be really interesting people who love to talk about their work, so don't be afraid to ask questions about what they're working on and the type of art they like to make.
