It is almost here. The day we have been waiting for all year: Election Day.
It is hard to believe that this circus will almost be over with, but that does not mean that the emotions and comments will end. Whether your preferred candidate loses or even if they win, here are some good reminders to think about when comprehending the results of the election.
1) The world will not end.
Contrary to everything your uncle Bob or your some of your old high school friends say, the world will keep spinning. The president of the United States will not instantly cause our country to blow up. Do not forget that any issue the presidential candidates discussed will only just start taking action once they are officially in office come January. When issues do start to begin making movements, remember that the president is not the only person who can make decisions. Every issue has to go through the House and the Senate before becoming a law. No drastic changes will be made instantly.
2) Continue to stay educated on issues and news.
Just because hot topic news stories or wild gossip will not be making it to the top of our social media feeds anymore, does not mean that the issues will just end once someone is elected. As our elected officials begin to start making changes or improvements in January, issues will begin to be discussed with other world powers and American elected officials. Some of these discussions will not make major news, but many of them will still be in the news somewhere. Is there a specific issue that you are passionate about? Follow official news sources that discuss political stories outside of the election and outside of major moments. Do your research and get the facts before you begin to share your opinions.
3) Your duty as an American citizen does not stop here.
We live in a country that is a democracy. That means that we are a government of the people. Many countries do not get to say this. This means that YOU(yes, you) can still voice your opinions and concerns and make an impact on our government. Write to your elected state officials. You may think that this does nothing, but they are meant to serve you. Let them hear your voice if there is an issue you care deeply about. You never know what kind of impact it could make.
4) Be kind.
Whatever the outcome may be, remember to be respectful and kind to others. They all had a vote just like you did. There is nothing that will be able to be done by being rude and cruel to other citizens.
