There are many things that happen when you’re from a small town. Though my high school was still 5A, most of our things like HEB and things like that were off of one road. The town still pretty much turned into a ghost town after 10 o’clock. That town in the middle of the hill country will forever be one of my favorite places. Though now I go to a university where everything is flat and brown, I like thinking back to my hometown and the things that I will forever be thankful for.
- The homey feeling that is always present.
There isn’t a better feeling than driving through the hill country after a long day at school or just a long day in general. The serene feeling and the calm breeze that you feel is something that can’t be replaced.
- Always knowing where you come from.
Nowadays, it’s really easy to lose who you are with the chaos of college and everything that surrounds it. Being swept up in the stereotypes of what college is and how maybe one should act can be very overwhelming. To know that where you come from could be somewhere that is the opposite from where you are living now can be a stress reliever. - Friday Night Lights will always be one of the best things.
The stereotypical thought that people have of Texas when it comes to football is definitely true. The entire town went to the football games. I was on the dance team, so I always went to the game, and the 50-yard line was my favorite place to perform. There was no better feeling than standing underneath those lights while having the support of the town behind you. My town was so into football that our stadium was bigger than some college towns, and we also had jumbo-tron to see the game. There were even commercials of local businesses that used students that were on the football team, cheerleaders, dancers and band kids. If High School hero had a moment that will live on forever, it was those commercials. - Your friends and neighbors turned into those people who will be in your life forever.
Most people don’t believe this when you tell them something about a small town, but for those who are, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Whenever you had a teacher or best friend, the chances of them living by you were very likely. Whenever I was a freshman in high school, I had this English teacher who I found out lived right across the street from me. To this day, we still talk like really good friends, and she also influenced what I wanted to do once I got to college. Another thing was the friends you made in high school. Most of my best friend group lived within a 10- 15 minute drive. Now we all go to different universities, but I know when I go home or whenever I’m upset they are always a phone call away.
So to my hometown: I may not seem like it, but I will forever be thankful for you.
