Women across the country are banding together to fight for equality thanks to Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer. Sandberg moved far beyond her usual work with the release of her book and foundation, “Lean In." This movement aims to encourage and to help women reach the top tiers of the workplace and break down gender barriers. “Lean In” has turned into a worldwide movement, and here’s why you should be a part of it.
1. It directly affects you
There are around 3.52 billion women in the world who together make up almost 50 percent of the population. That is a powerful force of people who have the potential to help positively shape and impact the world, but are being held back due to discrimination and lack of equal opportunities.
"Lean In," is working to provide women and girls with opportunities to not just be part of the workplace, but to have leadership roles within it. Each year, "Lean In" launches a campaign focused on the "importance of encouraging girls to lead, the crucial role men play in getting to equality and the amazing things women accomplish when they support each other."
"Lean In" has the potential to break down stereotypes and create better working environments and opportunities for everyone. A world with equal opportunities is a more productive and happy one. President Obama said it best back in 2014: "When women succeed, American succeeds."
2. It's local
"Lean In," is not just some far-off concept that will never actually reach home. It is happening in your own backyard with, "Lean in Circles." These are small groups that "meet regularly to share and learn together - like a book club focused on helping members achieve their goals," said Sandberg in a blog post. These typically consist of eight to 12 people meeting to discuss career paths and professional topics within a safe environment. There are currently 32,000 Lean In Circles in 151 countries around the world.
3. You have a lot to learn from Sheryl Sandberg
This is a powerhouse woman who is intent on breaking down barriers.
Sandberg, the founder of "Lean In," is also the COO of Facebook, where Mark Zuckerberg has credited her with building the business side of the company. Before Facebook, Sandberg had already established an impressive resume, including Chief of Staff to U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and vice president of Global Online Sales and Operations at Google.
Sandberg has also become well known for her many speeches on women and their careers, including the Ted Talk she gave in 2010. On top of her many career accomplishments, Sandberg decided to add author to her list of job titles. Her book, "Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead" has been the foundation to begin this new development. She took her ideas beyond the page in an effort to make a difference with her nonprofit, LeanIn.org
4. Emma Watson said so... need I say more?
Emma Watson's outspoken support has turned her into one of the faces of the organization. This is not Watson's first time speaking out for gender equality. The actress and graduate of Brown University was appointed a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014 and has had an active role in the UN Women's "HeforShe" campaign for gender equality.
Watson, along with many other familiar faces, such as Kerry Washington and Lena Dunham, took part in a video promoting "Lean In" and celebrating the women in their lives. The video encourages women to work together and support one another saying, "Behind every successful woman is another successful woman."
"Lean In" is a great opportunity for women to get ahead in their careers and help to close the gender gap in the workplace and subsequently, the world.
