Last year a German Shorthaired Pointer named CJ won Westminster Kennel Club's Best in Show. As someone who has had German Shorthaired Pointers since I was very little, I just wanted to share why I think they are the best. Now, let me caution you all -- while they are some of the sweetest dogs in the world, simply due to their energy level, they are not for everyone. On the lighter side of things, here is why Shorthairs are so great.
1. They never fail to make you laugh.
Whether it be sleeping in a funny position or making a funny face, there is never a dull moment with a pointer at your side. For example, one day I came home from school and heard Leo barking. I couldn't find him until I turned a corner into our family room and found Leo, laying with his head on the arm of the couch barking and wagging his tail.
2. They are incredible friends.
When I was struggling to make friends in middle school and high school, I would come home frustrated and crying. Ilse would lay on my bed with me and lay with her head on my back and just listen while I vented my problems to her.
3. They're up for anything.
Without fail, whenever I grab my keys or my shoes, it's an automatic 'Where are you going?' 'I don't care where you're going, can I come too?' Regardless of if it's a ride to run errands, going to visit my mom at work, a trip to the pet store or a trip to the park, they're up to go wherever you go. In Connecticut, you're not allowed to drive with friends until your license is a year old or you're eighteen. Since I couldn't drive anywhere with my human friends the first year I had my license, I would take my dogs everywhere with me, even just to go get coffee at the drive thru or go to the car wash.
4. They have distinct personalities.
Pointers are like people. There's no denying it. Some pointers are outgoing, some are shy. No shorthair is like another and it's part of what makes them so awesome.
