I love poetry and ever since I came to college, I've grown a deeper love for it. There are four poets whose work has gotten me through some of the toughest times in my life. Each of these poets have inspired my own creative thinking towards writing as well. I think that today, so many people are all about positivity and quotes that project it. Here are the four poets who inspire me.
1. Nayirrah Waheed
Waheed is a writer and poet whose work has inspires many. She is the author of two poetry books titled "Nejma" (2014)and "Salt (2013)." Her work is centered around self-expression and ignites something so powerful in the souls of those who read her writing. Her writing was first introduced to me in my Women's and Gender Studies introductory class.
2. Cleo Wade
Wade is a poet, artist, and public speaker who radiates so much positivity, honesty, and courage. Her journey to where she is now is inspiring. She recently published her first work of poetry titled "Heart Talk (2018)."Wade' work is not only inspiring but accessible and uplifting.
3. Audre Lorde
Lorde was an all-around poetic talent. Her work has inspired me in various ways that have allowed me to fully express who I am today. She is not only a poet but is a black lesbian feminist. Lorde embodies much of who I am and want to be. Some of her work includes "Zami: A New Spelling of My Name (1982)," "Sister Outsider (1984)," and "Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power (1978)."
4. Alice Walker
Walker is a poet and activist who wrote the novel "The Color Purple" (1982). Her work is mainly centered around depicting African-American culture an the lives of black women. Also, she is a symbol of black feminism.
I hope that you check out these poets and their work. Their journey's toward poetry and what it means to them is inspiring and has inspired my own work as well.
