1. Royal Rangoon
Of all the Asian cuisines that have populated urban restaurants across the globe, Burmese food hasn’t really gotten the attention it deserves, but like Myanmar itself, Burmese food is an eclectic mix of regional influences. When Bay Area denizens think of Burmese food, they’re often reminded of the long lines at Burma Superstar (which I also highly recommend). But, for those who are too impatient to wait, you can always check out Royal Rangoon on Telegraph Ave.
Favorite dish -- the honey sesame tofu.
2. Saturn
Pretty well-known in the city of Berkeley, but the reason I added this to the list is how vegan/vegetarian food doesn’t get the recognition it deserves sometimes. Saturn is the best option for vegetarians and vegans in the Bay Area. This Space Age diner combines a lively, quirky ambience and a vegetarian twist. Sure, the Diablo burger was very spicy (even for me, and I have a very high spice tolerance level), but if you’re a carnivore who thinks that vegan food tastes like cardboard without ever trying it, you’re in for a pleasant surprise.
Favorite dish -- Peanut Royale.
3. Sliver
Again, not as underrated as the rest of the restaurants on the list, but it certainly deserves as much love as Cheeseboard and Artichoke’s, which are talked about way more often than Sliver is. They put out a new pizza every day of the week, and they’re vegetarian- and vegan-friendly! Also, don’t be afraid to snag a few cups of the hot green sauce.
Favorite dish -- the Daily Special (because, I mean, that’s the only thing they really have).
4. Venus
Not surprising that Berkeley restaurants love the whole “planet” theme (UC Berkeley’s astronomy and astrophysics departments are quite renowned). I’ve mentioned this restaurant quite a few times before, but I want to reiterate that La Note isn’t the only brunch spot in Berkeley. If you’re sick and tired of waiting in line at La Note, check out this small, cute restaurant on Shattuck Ave. Again, it’s vegetarian-friendly, and their Chantilly hot chocolate is to die for. Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon with friends.
Favorite dish -- the lemon ricotta hotcakes with lemon curd and blackberry sauce.
