As the three-weekend celebration of festivals closed out with Stagecoach this past weekend, we bid farewell to Indio’s greatest treasures. I would like to pay homage to the men responsible for it all, Paul and Perry Tollett. Paul Tollett is the CEO and president of Goldenvoice, which promotes household named festivals, shows and venues. But did you happen to know these founders studied chemical engineering at Cal Poly Pomona? This school can proudly say it gave an education to these masterminds.
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

Ah, the event where you leave your worries behind and float on into the Inland Empire. The eclectic genres of music from rock, hip-hop, indie, pop and electric dance music are sure to satisfy a number of music tastes--while the art installations and sculptures draw in audiences looking to feed their creative souls. Could you imagine a life without your beloved ferris wheel, band reunions and three days worth of a free spirit? Minus the dust storms and week-old cough, this place gives Disneyland a run for its money as “The Happiest Place on Earth.”
Stagecoach - California’s Country Music Festival
Also known to go-ers as “Ragecoach,” the music fest follows the two weekends of Coachella with a country equivalent. This festival offers country fans a desert experience to call their own in Indio, California. Mainstream names headline each year performing among other artists in the bluegrass, roots rock and alternative country genres. I’ll raise my beer and kick up my cowboy shoes for that.
Other festivals presented by Goldenvoice include: FYF Fest, Firefly Music Festival, Hangout Music Fest, Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival and Panorama.
The Glass House and Fox Theater
Just further back down west of the 10 freeway, Perry and Paul Tollett co-own The Glass House and Fox Theater--home to local shows year-round. Goldenvoice also conveniently holds sideshows featuring acts from Coachella during those weeks. Nicknamed "Localchella," these shows provide accessibility for those who couldn’t make it to a full weekend out in the IE. These intimate venues offer a neighborhood experience in Pomona, California.
Many colleges have their football teams and large reputations to uphold their school pride. Cal Poly Pomona can sometimes be seen as an underdog school with the need for more recognition it deserves. This school has plenty to be proud of, but these musical gifts brought to us by two CPP alumna needs a light shined down on it.
