When I first heard the news of the passing of Alan Rickman, I was truly speechless. Among many of the roles that he took on in his career, the one that resonated with me during my childhood was his portrayal of Severus Snape in the "Harry Potter" series. Snape had a huge influence on my life and many others. So here are four lessons that Snape taught me that I'll hold on to, always.
1. People choose what parts of them to show to the world.
People are layered and more complex than what we perceive at first glance. The side that Snape showed to the world was a cruel and unfair potions professor especially towards Harry and his friends. Snape's sacrifice, bravery and his ability to love deeply was hidden from the world. You cannot know someone off the bat. People are more intricate than that.
2. In life, we are going to face obstacles and we are going to do things that are going to be beyond difficult. But we have to find the courage to do what is right – even if it means you have to stand alone.
No one knew of Snape's true nature other than Dumbledore. Killing Dumbledore was a necessary act for Snape's journey. He seemingly demonstrated his loyalty to the Dark Lord, but in the process lost his true allies. Acting as a double agent is difficult. He had no one to turn to once Dumbledore was gone. But he found the courage and strength within himself to continue fighting for his cause –– regardless of whether he was going to get appraisal, credit or support. In doing so, he demonstrates that we do the right thing because it is the right thing, not because of rewards or external praise.
3. Labels do not define you. People can change.
Slytherin and death eater. Supposedly, loyal follower of the evil Lord Voldemort. But we all know that isn't the case. Once Lily became a target, Snape changed. He recognizes the errors he made and became a double agent with the hopes of saving Lily from Voldemort. And even after her death, he dedicates himself to his cause in honor of her. Snape's journey solidifies that we are more than the labels others classify us with.
4. Love is one of the most powerful forms of magic. It is worth preserving, worth fighting for, and it remains after death.

Rest in peace, Alan Rickman. Thank you for bringing to life a character that would have a profound impact on my life as well as many others. You will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.
