4 Important Things I Learned From My Dog
If you have a dog, you understand what an important part of your life they are. I had wanted a dog for years. Every birthday wish and every letter to Santa, a dog was my only wish. When I finally got my four legged friend, I instantly fell in love with her wet, cold nose and wagging tail. I couldn’t wait to teach her new tricks. She struggled with the command, “Stay” but always seemed to know what the word, “Walk” meant. While I was training my pup, I had no idea that she would teach me some things in return.
1. Trust
You will never meet another creature that is willing to trust you more than a dog. Yes, they may not have much of a choice, but they show they trust you by listening to your rules. Dogs are extremely faithful to their owners. You may not be able to take the dog out as soon as they have to go to the bathroom, but they still wait and trust that you will take them out as soon as you can. Most people trust no one because of people who have done them wrong in the past. However, dogs can teach us that having faith in people from the start can create a wonderful friendship.
2. Happiness
There is not much that will stop this four legged companion from being happy. Anything can make a dog happy. Whether it is a simple walk outside, or when it is time for dinner, their wagging tails are hard to miss. When was the last time you saw a tennis ball and felt so much joy? Probably never. Not only do physical things make these dogs happy, but also gestures. A dog is always content with a small pet on the head or simple praise. It is important to look at the small things in life and appreciate them. This, in turn, will make us happier people.
3. Love
Dogs love to love. They love their family and will show it in any way. Wagging tails, big smiles, and sometimes the gross lick on the face is just a small way to show how much they love you. They never want to take advantage of that love and will show it every chance that they get. Dogs teach us that we should never let a moment pass where we don’t show and share our love with the people around us.
4. Forgiveness
This is the most important lesson that you can learn from a dog. Humans aren’t perfect dog owners, yet, somehow dogs still love you unconditionally. Sometimes people let their pride get in the way of forgiveness which hinder their relationships with others. Dogs let things go because nothing is as important as their relationship with you, which is something we can learn from.
My pup reminds me every day of the most important, yet basic, things in life. These simple acts are often taken advantage of by humans. To dogs, however, it is their way of life. If we all took a dog’s point of view in life, then we would all have more friendly and loving characters. We may not have the cute tails or wet noses (thank goodness), but we do have more ways of communicating than dogs do, and we should all take advantage of that.
