From 2014 to 2015, the female rap scene took a turn for the worst when “Igloo Australia,” better known as Iggy Azealia, garnered unwarranted and undeserved attention. In 2016, it seems like the reign of the rap embarrassment is finally coming to a close. Thankfully, there are plenty of powerful voices to take her place.
1. Junglepussy
Junglepussy is everything. From her unabashed expression of sexual agency to her no-nonsense attitude towards men, Junglepussy continues to inspire and amaze me. When listening to Junglepussy, expect to be chided for eating unhealthily, pressured into trying Trader Joe's and encouraged to embrace your inner boss-ness.
2. NoName Gypsy
Like many others, I first stumbled upon NoName Gypsy while listening to Chance The Rapper’s “Lost,” and her comedically self deprecating lyrics immediately enticed me. Since the single, NoName has been featured on Mick Jenkin’s “Comfortable,” as well as Kirk Knight’s “Late Knight Special,” all while working on her own eclectic mixtape, "Telefone." Although she may not have multiple completed projects, any hip-hop head would be stupid to snooze on this budding rap princess.
3. Rhapsody
While I’m not necessarily a fan of Rhapsody, I can’t deny her impact. This female rapper has been featured on everything from Kendrick’s "To Pimp a Butterfly" to tracks from OGs like Wu-Tang's Raekwon. And with co-signs like that, one can’t help but take notice. With an undeniably polished rap style, Rhapsody is a promising voice in hip hop.
4. 1st Lady
1st Lady is no one new. Emerging almost a half a decade ago with an unapologetic ode to sex work and sexual autonomy, single “I’m Selling P*ssy” made it clear that 1st Lady was not to be trifled with. Aside from being an important lesson in unconditional self love, “I’m Selling P*ssy” is an undeniable banger. Making a splash in the rap game without even a Wikipedia page, 1st Lady is a decidedly slept on talent.
