As college kids transition back to campuses as winter break comes to a not-so-wintry close, there are certain almost-universal things that we’ll all miss at some point during the first few weeks back. The following things are on the most-missed list of practically every student.
1. Free, Home-cooked Food
Whether it’s coming home to find your favorite meal being served for dinner or going out to a restaurant and not having to pay for your food, eating at home is insanely better (not to mention less expensive) than living on a college diet of Chipotle and Ben & Jerry’s. Finding a fully stocked fridge when you have 2 A.M. munchies due to a screwed up sleep schedule is one of the best parts of coming home.
2. Your Childhood Room
Being able to sleep, alone, in a memory-filled room and on a ridiculously comfortable bed is one of the greatest joys of a college student. Coming back to my semi-sleepable twin bed in my half of the dorm room is always very sad when I think about my empty bed back home.
3. Pets
I don’t know about you, but I feel both very happy and very sad when my family sends me pictures of my pets. On one hand, I get to see what the little nuggets are up to that day. On the flip side, it makes me miss them even more. One of the best things about being home is having the ability to assault my pets with affection whenever I want, and not being able to do that in college is the reason why you will catch me at almost every Cathedral Dog Tuesday.
4. Family
Absence truly does make the heart grow fonder with this one. Being able to talk to my parents and sister daily, instead of sporadically through my phone screen, is without a doubt the best thing about being home. I won’t see them for four months after I leave to go back to Pittsburgh for college, and the reality of that is becoming clearer as my time at home draws to a close. I’ll miss hearing about my sister’s daily life, talking with my mom, and showing my dad my latest finds in music and on Netflix.
