My 4 Biggest Fails Of College Week One

I guess it could have been worse.

My 4 Biggest Fails Of College Week One

Every college freshman, whether they admit it or not, has an idea in their mind about how their first week of college should go. Images of new friends, Pinterest looking dorm rooms and exploring campus until classes start dance around in their heads. Well, I certainly had all those visions when I arrived here on campus on move in day, and while all those dreams came true, a series of unfortunate events happen to come my way along with them. Here are my four biggest fails of my first week of college....

1. Printing out all my classes syllabi BEFORE the first day of class.

Now, this wouldn't be such a problem if my school didn't give you a $24 budget for "free" printing that is meant to last all semester, $13 of which I no longer have because of taking the time to print out the novel long syllabi. Little did I know that almost all of my professors had the syllabus waiting for me when I walked into class on the first day. Lesson learned.

2. Passing out during the mandatory "safety zone" talk for all first year students.

If you knew me in high school, you'd know that I have a slight fainting issue when it comes to anything revolving around human growth and development. Surprisingly, and much to my dismay because this wasn't a topic that usually had me running for the door, about five minutes into the sexual harassment and safety presentation my vision started to get a little fuzzy. I could feel it coming.

Crap.

I quickly rose from my seat near the front, said a rushed "excuse me" to the girl I had just met in my orientation group about two days beforehand, and speed walked to the door. I made it out the door and across the hall before I slumped against the bathroom door and proceeded to faint. Thankfully, I had my orientation group leader's cell number and she was able to take me on a tour of campus so that I didn't have to bare walking back into the auditorium.

3. Leaving my shoes in a guy's dorm room.

The first weekend on campus some guys on my brother floor (S/O to Witmer 3B) projected a movie onto their dorm wall, so me and a few of my hallmates headed over to join them. I walked over with flips flops on, and needless to say, when I woke up the next morning back in my room they were nowhere to be found. Oops?

4. Falling flat on my butt while doing laundry.

My first time in the laundry room went surprisingly well, which is why I walked so confidently into the room, and the wet floor, the second time around. I was so busy carrying my laundry bag and chatting with one of my hallmates (and noticing the cute guy drying his clothes) that I didn't see the massive puddle surrounding the entrance that I totally and completely wiped out on. It was the classic fall-flat-on-your-back-clothes-fly-everywhere cartoon kind of fall. There turned out to be no open washers at that time so I made a quick exit and retreated back to my dorm while my hall mate laughed at me the whole walk back to the third floor.

Needless to say I had quite the eventful first week of college. As embarrassing as these events were at the time, I'm glad that they happened because they filled my week with memories, laughs, and stories to be shared. So, for all you who have some embarrassing stories under your belt, don't worry, because you certainly aren't alone.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
