Your 4 a.m. friends are your true best friends
And I'm not talking about some Thugger Thugger, “That's my best friend, that's my best friend.” Type of situation, no. Your true best friends. Four a.m. is when the bars and clubs are closed, and you may be fully alone. Four a.m. is when you've stayed up all night on that final paper… and it's still not done. Four a.m. is when you've been searching for an answer… to a test… to life, and you're tired of searching. Four a.m. is when you wake up in a cold sweat, terrified…. Terrified about the decision you made or didn't make… that recurring dream that turns out is your reality. Matchbox Twenty sang, it's 3 a.m. I must be lonely… 4 a.m. is much worse, it's a curse to be alone at that hour… so what? You grab a drink, take a shower… hope it all washes away… make yourself say “it's all good, I'm okay, I can make it on my own…” but it's well known, you can't. You need that 4 a.m. friend to have your back. If you find that 4 a.m. girl you better marry her, cuz nothing's scarier… than being alone at 4 a.m.
I’ve had a couple 4 a.m. friends in my life. Most of them are still around and I am thankful to God for them. These are the people who will get you through your toughest situations in life. When you're down and out, they will pick you up. And they don't necessarily have to do this at four in the morning, it could be at 3:59 or any time in between. But, I call them “4 a.m. friends” because if you're still awake at 4 a.m. you've either had one of the best or worst nights of your life. Four a.m. is a depressing time if you're alone. You really look at your life and wonder about all the decisions you've made. For someone like me, this can end up in you just beating yourself up about it all. Four a.m. can also be a very happy time, the night is winding down, the everything has closed, and your with your beat friends having one last chat before bed. You are all probably reminiscing on all the good times you've had together, and stories of unforgettable memories that you are probably telling completely wrong. At either of these times though, it's important to have someone there. For celebration, or consolation, it's good to have 4 a.m. friends.
