365 Day Poetry Goal: Week 27
Julian Wynn Smith

This post is covering week 27.

I apologize for being late with this week. I’ve been studying for Finals week this semester, and it’s really been kicking me. I’ve luckily been able to work on these in my down time, so I don’t go completely insane. Like I promised, I wanted to focus on positive poetry this time, mainly focused on the cheesy ass topic of love. A poet’s got to go that route some day! Try not to get sick from all of the cheese. I’m lactose intolerant, so I don’t know how I survived…

As usual, for those of you who do not know why I am doing this, I will quote my first article here:

“I have realized that a great way to keep sane when you’re busy (especially with very tedious work) is to keep your creativity flowing. So recently, I have decided to start a sort of creative goal for myself. I’m going to write 365 poems. That is one every day without stopping. This is all free form and off the cuff. So if it’s short, long, good, and/or crap, that is up for you to decide.”

Please enjoy.

This is the first of my cheesy love poetry. This one focuses on people who have imperfections, which is great, because it shows character! Honestly, don’t all “beautiful” models and celebrities look the same? It’s the wrinkles, the freckles, the moles (unless it’s a medical problem), and more that give people their uniqueness. Everyone has their own special beauty.

Beauty of a Raw Diamond

Much like a raw diamond
Showing every characteristic
The beauty that society projects
Doesn’t seem to be realistic
“When in Rome” doesn’t sit with me well
I prefer distinctions that I can tell
Attracted to you? I would say I’m compelled
To express your beauty, but words always fail

A setting sun enjoyed my millions
Or monuments abound that many relish
If beauty was challenged by this decision
You would be the one I would want to cherish
You stick out among all of the rest
To know you was something I couldn’t resist
All of the others are just a mist
That fade away when the heat persists

To know it’s mutual how we both feel
Yes, this is real, that is no lie
A kind of raw diamond that I’d always steal
No one else saw the beauty in your eyes
If I had to die, I would want you by my side
And tell everyone that I know with pride
That you were my wife,
And that we lived out a beautiful life

---

This one has a unique structure. It’s written in more of a song-like structure with the parentheses emphasizing background vocals. This is the second in my cheesy love poetry.

You Never Know What You Will Find

You were the one in my dreams all of those nights
(All of those nights)

Turning all of my wrongs into rights
Whenever you enter my sights,
Compelled to tell you I love you just one more time
(Just one more time)

The world is so vast, yet I was given a sign
That turned all of my curves into a straight line
You were the crowd like you were under a spotlight
(Under a spotlight)

I’m glad I didn’t give up the fight
There’s not enough words I could write,
To express the way you make my world so bright
(World so bright)

Life doesn’t give you any insight,
On where or when you will find,
The one that never fails to make your heart ignite
(Your heart ignite)

So live out your life,
When yours is so finite
Don’t let yourself die, regretting that you never tried
(That you never tried)

---

This one is a bit different than the others… It’s a lot… Hotter, let’s say that. Basically the lust side of love. I tried my best to not be too explicit, or too cringy when writing this. If I failed, well, sorry!

Passion at First Sight

When you glare like that from afar
My instinct becomes in tune
Because when there's that spark,
There's only one thing left to do

Forgive me for being so brash
But you're coming with me tonight
I know that this love will last
Because I see the fire in your eyes

The heat that beats off the skin
From our trembling embrace
Released a passion from within
The night suddenly became a race

As we're watching the candles melt
After knowing each other's taste
Our eyes lock as we both felt
We no longer needed to chase

Sensations heightened when we touch
It took no effort to initiate
Desires transcended into lust
Never regretting the ones we made

It was just you and me in this world
An eternity wouldn't have been enough
Time or space to live in this whirl
Is this what they call love?

I actually watched a few episodes of Mad Men recently, and I’m loving the 50s aesthetic, and most definitely the music! This piece is very much inspired by the big band swing music of the time. So, think of that type of tune when you read this one.

So What Do You Say?

It's such a wonderfully feeing
To know that you are near
With words that I'm stealing
Just to keep you staying here

Since I've known you I've never felt afraid
To be alone in this dreary, worldly maze
The best is yet to come
So what do you say?

Nothing makes me less blue
Than the way you stare into my eyes
Or the way you say I love you
When we walk towards our paradise

Since I've known you I've never felt afraid
To be together in this dreary, worldly maze
The best is yet to come
So what do you say?

So what do you say?
Let's just get away,
And live out our days
Now that it's not a race,
We can enjoy ourselves,
We've got it made!

---

Nothing really special about this one. It’s just the fifth in my cheesy love poetry. The tone of this a sort of older setting, as I stated, the fifties. I seem to like that style when it comes to love, don’t I? Maybe that’s my old soul coming out in me.

Your Beauty is No Lie

With a face that makes hearts pain
Or skip when there's nowhere else to go
Even when every day feels routine
You make the present a wonderful show

Velvet curtains drawn just like the fifties
Feelings of anxiety for the upcoming event
Good times always fly ever so swiftly
All the better for memories to represent

Laugh at my attempts to compliment
I never lie about your beauty
Any day we share a moment
Is a day I’d cherish fondly

Your walk has always been cool and calm
Your voice rings a pleasant tone
Gladly stand behind as you walk along
Admiring the beauty I've just been shown

I’d grab your hand and spin you around
Just so I can see those beautiful eyes
Before I knew it a kiss was found,
What a wonderful surprise

With a face that makes hearts pain
Or skip when there's nowhere else to go
Even when every day feels routine
You make the present a wonderful show

---

This one is simply another cheesy love piece. The sixth and final one.

My Dear, My Love

As I lie down thinking of you,
Glad that I have the ability to
You make a sad day bright
And a bright day feel right
Midnight looms overhead
Again, you're where my thoughts have led
You are what makes a beautiful life
Thoughts I'd gladly meditate on at night

With a sense of peace I’ve never felt before
You give me this as soon as I show up at your door
Your face is as beautiful as your mind
Without your advice, I’d surely fall behind
You give me your perspective in life
And never disregard any of mine
A strong sense of trust without vanity
The kind found rarely within a family

True beauty is what you find inside
No matter how amazing you are outside
It shows in every step you take
And in everything you say
I am truly the luckiest person
In this world that’s so uncertain
To find someone I lift high above
Even over myself, my dear, my love

This piece is dedicated to a very special group of friends whom I will never forget for as long as I live. Thank you for being there for me guys.

The Rumors Say...

We make old things feel new
We're always positive in our views
Open to anything we want to do
We mesh well as a group, that's the truth

We each don't share the same style
Yet, we'll still travel for miles and miles
Even when the road is bumpy for a while
Our journey still ends with a big smile

One who's energy is never frozen
One who knows what to say in the moment
One who's smile is infectiously potent
One who is a soft spoken poet

Even when life shows us separate ways
To paths that we all must take some day
We'll never forget the memories we've made
As a team of misfits... The rumors say

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

21954

StableDiffusion

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

125732

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
