The day of graduation was one of those days where you just really didn't know how to feel. It was true melancholy. Happiness, because the hard work finally paid off, but sadness because it is all coming to an end. Although some of these things were terrible or boring at the time, there are times when I really miss them.
1. Uniforms
Looking like Blair Waldorf every day (not really, like we actually tried) or finding new ways to defy the dress code were a creative way to impress your friends. Down to my fingertips or two inches above the knee? Black socks or navy blue socks? House shoes or moccasins?
2. Positivity
It was always present, even if that is hard to believe at an all girl school.
3. Support
In an all-girl school, there was always someone to encourage you or help you when you needed it.
4. Lunch
There were no limits to how much you could eat at lunch, except the bell.
5. Empowerment
It always felt like there was nothing you couldn't do, and anything was possible.
6. No Boundaries
The conversations could be about anything, ranging from period cramps to what happened on your date. There were endless amounts of things to talk about, which is why number 21 was so frequent.
7. Sports
The sports teams were supportive of each other and often you could play a sport each season. Games were always hyped and signs were usually made.
8. History Classes
You were taught about men AND women in history, with special emphasis on women in history.
9. Not Having to Try
You saved a lot of money on razors, shaving cream, a brush and makeup by not using them in the winter and only on busy weekends.
10. Sweatpants
At my high school, we actually had uniform sweatpants, not the greatest, but definitely better than wearing a skirt outside.
11. Purses as "Backpacks"
It was always a challenge to carry books and folders and notebooks and pens and markers to and from each class, especially when you couldn't carry a backpack. Large purses were very in demand and very useful.
12. Small Classes
The classes were always small and very close knit, usually there was a class picture taken at the end of the year. Because my eighth period Theology class was definitely better than every other one, we even had a cheer.
13. Relationships
You had friends from all over the city and even friends of all different ages. Teachers constantly offered help when necessary or support at sports events. The relationships created over four years definitely fluctuated, but once you found your group, that was that.
14. Opportunities
There were so many different things to be involved in and if something you want wasn't offered, you could add it. Usually the same people were involved in the same things.
15. Everyone Knew Everything
If someone died, expect flowers, cards and condolences.
16. Everyone Knew Everyone
Even teachers you never had knew your name.
17. Chorus
This class was a challenge to find ways to avoid getting caught doing homework and find news ways to sleep. The concerts were pretty cool too.
18. Friday Nights
Friday night football games, trips to the mall, the movies or to your best friend's house were quality ways to spend these nights.
19. Dances
Planned by girls, for girls. What could go wrong? Usually these ended up being your friend group because every girl would ask a guy from the friend group.
20. Male Teachers
Making male teachers feel uncomfortable with the simple asking of a tampon or talking about some boy drama was pretty easy and common, which made for a fun reaction.
21. Talking
There was always something to talk about, which meant there were a lot of interrupted classes and not a lot of quiet.
22. Organization
You found new ways to organize each activity you were involved in and how to organize your locker and purse.
23. The Principal
She knew everything about everyone. Even three years after my graduation, I see her and she asks about my classes, my family and the people I used to hang out with. She is all-knowing and isn't afraid to show it.
24. Dress Down Days
If you can even fathom dressing lazier than a uniform, it was real. Sweatpants and yoga pants were a girl's best friend on dress down days, especially if they were a boy's sweatpants.
25. Sports Bras Daily
There was never any adjusting or pushing up or skinny straps to stop you from enjoying your day. Plus, you never had to change for practice after school.
26. Drama
There was always something going on and everyone knew about it, usually before third period.
27. Guy Friends
Snapchatting and texting your guy friends during class was the ultimate way to make it through a boring lecture. It was always funny to hear someone's phone go off in class, but you always checked to make sure it wasn't yours.
28. Crushes on Male Teachers
There was always one girl that had a weird crush on a male teacher and everyone knew about it, except that teacher.
29. Extra-Curricular Activities
The options were endless and you can find new ways to express yourself.
30. Learning More Than Just Math, Science and History
If I had to tell you what I learned in high school, it wouldn't be from the books. It would be that I was encouraged to be strong in beliefs and aspire to be anything I wanted without limitations. I was challenged to be great and look for greatness.
