Move in day is over, the opening ceremony is done and my parents have left. I'm sitting in my room after a long day of meetings about sexual harassment and Title IX thinking about all of the things people have told me about college and the different things I, a student for less than a week, have already learned.
1. The beds aren't that bad.
Sure, it's smaller than the one I have at home, but it's not any less comfortable. While rolling around throughout the night, I felt little wobbles here and there. OSHA might not approve of the sturdiness, as I have duct taped one corner, but I'm surviving, and it's giving me a place to rest my head.
2. People are actually ready to learn.
Throughout orientation and part of WOW (Week of Welcome), I've met numerous people ready to dive into their major and get ready to go. Also, I've spoken with other business majors who are older than me who are excited about their professors and another year of investigating the Chicago area. It's great because now I'm ready to start doing the same kind of thing: taking the classes I'm passionate about.
3. Not everyone cares about the sports.
Yes, the baseball team is still good looking, yes the cheerleaders are peppy and yes, sports give us a little extra push to make it to the weekend. But, I've learned while being at a D-3 school, that some people just don't give a damn. I realized this when I heard a Chinese transfer student refer to the softball team as the women's baseball team this morning. I know they have softball in China! You're not fooling anyone!
I'm having a wonderful time here at Concordia University Chicago, and I'm looking forward to meeting more amazing people, with even more adventures. But until then, this is what I've got. More to come!
