As my month of summer comes to an end, I've found myself reflecting on the past few weeks. After working full time for six months, I accomplished a lot in the first four weeks of work-free summer I've had since I was about fifteen. Whether I was on the beach or on a plane, I was able to see some great movies. Here are three of my favorites, which, coincidentally, are all based on true stories.
1. The Innocents
Set in 1945 Poland, "The Innocents" (original title, Les innocentes) tells the tale of a female Red Cross doctor who discovers a convent of pregnant nuns. Both heart-wrenching and fascinating, "The Innocents" is based on a true story. To save the lives of the nuns and their children, the French doctor must earn their trust while respecting their religious beliefs, a task which she discovers to be a difficult one. Trigger warning: the references to sexual assault and depiction of attempted sexual assault in this film may be upsetting for some.
2. The Infiltrator
Featuring stunning performances by Bryan Cranston, Diane Kruger, and Benjamin Bratt, "The Infiltrator" is fast-paced, intriguing, and mind-blowing. Yet another film based on a true story, it tells the incredible tale of how U.S. customs official Robert Mazur not only infiltrated Pablor Escobar's mammoth Medellin cartel, but also exposed the money-laundering scheme that brought down bankers worldwide.
3. Everest
This one is for the hikers, the adventurers, and the mountain-climbers. Everest tells the story of the deadliest day on Mount Everest, known as the "1996 Mount Everest disaster," a day on which several climbing teams attempted to summit Everest and were caught in a vicious storm. With guest appearances from brands such as The North Face and Mountain Hardwear, Everest does a great job of representing the technical aspects of climbing while paying homage to the lives lost on the mountain.
