I've been drawing for most of my life, but when i really got in touch with my love for it was when i was in 3rd grade. One of the biggest reason why i continued to draw through out my life was to simply get better at drawing. i heard a saying once "You're only as good as your last drawing." and i still believe and live by that motto even today in college. These are some of the steps that i have found have helped me improve my drawings and matured me as a drawer.
Step 1: Humility
If you are going to sit down and try to improve on your drawing, you are going to have to be humble. Humble with yourself and with others, you need to be humbled to understand that there will always be a need for improvement no matter what, and that you are not the at your peak in skill just yet. You are also going to need to humble to the criticism that people will give you as a striding artist, take their advice into consideration whither you agree on it or not.
Step 2: Practice
Yup...practice, i know you know this already but practice really does make perfect. Just like i said "You are only as good as your last drawing." if you are going to improve you are going to need to make the effort and DRAW !! One of the things I've always noticed in people who want to get good at drawing but don't see much improvement is that they just do not draw as often. They don't take the time to sit down and draw, then complain that they are not good and cry and complain. if you are gonna improve on your drawings you are gonna have to at least sit down for an hour and just simply draw. It doesn't have to be good, its just for practice. Try drawing things you do not like to draw, for me its environments, I'm really stink at drawing them, so I've practiced and learned from how other artist tackle drawing them and i simply attempted to apply, and eventually i saw some improvement I'm still learning, but the practice has helped me understand drawing those environments a lot more hands on.
Step 3: DON'T GIVE UP !
Know that feeling when you are drawing there for an hour or more, and just nothing good is coming out? yup, we have all been there, at least i know i have. we all just want to make great and awesome artwork, but sometimes we just become big butts dishin' out crap ! Don't give up dude ! you have push through these moments, they are useful and will help build muscle memory. Be careful that you don't over do it, taking a break from drawing can be good, but not for long ! take a day off or walk away from the table for an hour if you need to get the work done. Let your mind clear but what ever you do, don't give up, if this is what you want to do(getting better at drawing) then you want to stick through the tough times and build up that good lovin' for drawing some cool stuff !
These are just 3 things that have helped and pushed me to becoming a better artist and have helped improved my drawings, i hope that they were helpful or inspiring to some degree !!!
