We've all at least thought this once or twice. We may go through our days speaking phrases such as, "where did the time go?"; "I'm running late!" and my personal favorite, "what day is it?"
Time is one of the top things that seem to get away from us. Most of us have not truly mastered how to manage it, let alone how to make the most of it. After a long day of work or school (college specifically) on top of the rest of your life, it is easy to go on feeling as if you are just being dragged through your life as opposed to actually living it. Here are some reasons why you may be feeling like you never have enough time, and a few friendly reminders on how you can get it back.
1. Not enough rest.
Notice here that I didn't say sleep. Getting sleep is only a part of getting rest. We are not just physical beings, we are mental and spiritual beings as well. Our minds and spirits need just as much rest as our bodies do. Poor management of your thought patterns and emotions can cause you to be imbalanced, thus making your sleep time less effective. Try to slow down (mentally and physically), get some quiet time before bed and try to write out your day in a journal. You will be surprised at how rested you feel after getting some things off of your chest and quieting your surroundings. Turn that phone off sometimes, too!
2. Pursuing too much at once.
Overachievers hate to hear this, but it's true. There is metaphorically such a thing as biting off more than you can chew, but sometimes you literally do not have enough hours in a day to do everything you feel you want to accomplish. You may feel yourself taking on the workload of two or three people when you are only one person.
One of my favorite rappers once said multitasking is a myth. I believe that has some truth in it. While sometimes we can't get around juggling a couple of things at one time, a lifestyle of multitasking is not practical or productive. Try focusing on a handful of major things you need to accomplish in a week, and start focusing in on maybe just a few items per day. Learn to say no to some people, even if they sign your paycheck. Be productive, not just busy. News flash: you're not a Powerpuff Girl, you don't have to save the world before bedtime.
3. Poor time management.
I know most of us think our number one resource is money, and, while it's certainly in the top five, I'm going to argue that our time is more valuable than our bank accounts. Some of us are wasting more time than we are wasting money; and like money, we may be spending time on things that don't matter. Others may simply not be using time effectively.
Try reevaluating your schedule. Maybe there are some unnecessary things in your life right now that are taking up your precious time. Here's my advice: if that's the case, remove it! Life is short as it is - the last thing you need is another time leech. You should now be left with the things you actually need to do. Prioritize and allot time in your schedule for these things either daily or weekly depending on the task and it's relevance. Some of us think we have too much on our plate when we may just be spending too much time in the kitchen. In other words, don't spend so much time in one place doing one thing when there is more that you can or need to accomplish.
Now, don't beat yourself up if you find yourself missing it at times. Balancing our schedules can be a lifetime practice that we are bound to mess up from time to time. No worries! Take it step by step - here a little, there a little. At least that way you can get some of that rest we talked about. On an overall scale, my hope is that with a few adjustments and a little application, you can find some of those hours you were looking for.
