Most people talk about this story and its movies along with the topic of doing drugs or something of the like. There are definitely a lot of colors and patterns, and a lot of things don't make much sense. The movies are pretty trippy, for lack of a better word. Even so, I don’t think I’ve ever talked to anyone who dislikes Alice In Wonderland. Yes, everyone has their preference of the many renditions, but I personally love the story itself, and there are 3 main reasons that have nothing to do with acid.
- Alice shamelessly goes against the norms. One of the most widely known quotes from the movie is when Alice’s dad tells her that its okay to be different. “Have I gone mad?" "I’m afraid so. You’re mad, bonkers, off your head. But I’ll tell you a secret, all the best people are.” Later, she tells the same thing to the Mad Hatter.
She refuses to do anything just because it's what she's supposed to do.
“What if it was agreed that proper was wearing a codfish on your head? Would you wear it?" - Alice knows she can do whatever she puts her mind to. In the opening scene of the 2010 movie, Alice’s dad tells his friends of his journey, “The only way to achieve the impossible is to believe it is possible."
"From the moment I fell down that rabbit hole, I have been told what to do and who to be. I have been accused of being Alice and of not being Alice, but this is my dream and I'll decide where it goes from here.. I make the path."
When Alice must slay the Jabberwock, she says to the hatter, "This is impossible," and he replies, "only if you believe it is." - The creativity behind the whole story is inspiring. Who would have ever thought of painting roses red or a giant talking caterpillar who smokes hookah? Lewis Carroll brought ridiculous amounts of creativity out through the story of Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a faraway land. The creatures and people Carroll has embedded in his story are unique twists on things we see in our world that I could have never created.
