With all the dads in Pullman getting ready to pack their bags and go home, I thought this would be a perfect time to recap on three reasons why Dad’s Weekend is so special at Washington State University. The event dedicated to honor dads for the entire weekend.
1. Distance makes the visit special
One thing that’s true for a lot of us is WSU far from most of our homes. If you’re in or out of the state, chances are you’re pretty far from home. So it feels that much more special when your dad comes visit for the weekend. For many freshmen, it’s the first time seeing their dad since move-in day so it is a much needed reunion. While for upperclassmen, it’s a great way to catch up on things going back home. The visit is also a great motivator to keep up the hard work, half way through the semester you really feel the slump and want to quit. However, the weekend pep talks always gets you back on track, for one last push before Thanksgiving. Dad’s Weekend also gets you excited when it’s your turn to visit home.
2. Reintroducing Pullman to them
For an entire weekend with your dad, you get the chance to show him around campus and the city of Pullman. By the time Dad’s Weekend rolls around, you know the places to take out your dad. You know the restaurants he’ll like and activities he’d like to do. Pullman isn’t the same small town you first experienced at orientation.
“Back in my day we didn’t have a fancy Northside”
One of the coolest things about having a dad that was alumni at WSU is hearing stories of what the school was like when they attended. One satisfying moment about this is showing them what has changed since they went to school and finding out what’s stayed the same.
3. Cougar Football
One of the best things about Dad’s Weekend is ending the event with a bang. Whether it’s your first time or your 100th time, nothing beats cougar football. A sea of crimson and gray flood Martin Stadium. Thousands of Cougs both new and old cheer the football team to victory. The campus and town come alive and the school becomes unified. The phase “Go Cougs!!” can never be said enough. For Dads experiencing this the first time ever or first since they were students, it’s a special treat you get to share.
No matter how old you are in college, Dad’s Weekend at WSU is a great way to spend time with them. It's a moment to forget some of the stresses of school and share it with your old man. Your dad will get so excited to come for dad’s weekend, he’ll book hotel reservations a year in advance.
