27 Million And Counting: Human Trafficking And Modern Day Slavery

I am constantly looking for ways to help people in my surrounding community even if I don't know them. Growing up the way that I did my family had help from a lot of people and some that I didn't even know existed. This makes me so compassionate to really give back to my community and countries around the world. I have wanted to just really share what I am feeling with everything that is going on our lives around us.

Human trafficking is considered modern day slavery, and it is astounding that over 27 MILLION men, women and children. There are many types of trafficking and the one that I am most passionate about is human sex trafficking. I will be honest it was not something I have been thinking and worrying about since I was in high school and not even since I came to college. I found out about human sex trafficking about two years ago while I was sitting in one of my major courses. Since I am a CDFL major I hear a lot about the big bad world and the not so nice people in it because I am going to school to help these people in any way that I can.

When I describe my major I tell people that I will basically be a councilor but with out the big money. Since I have always wanted to give back I began thinking of different organizations that I could become a part of. Many came through my mind and they were anything from C.A.S.A to the Head Start Program in my community. Then after one quick lecture where we talked about a ring of traffickers in our very own county I just had to know more.

Ever since I was in middle school the Holocaust has fascinated me ( I know this is off topic but believe me its going to work). I have always been intrigued by the way people's minds work and the ways that they believe in different aspects of life. I would sit in history class when we would be learning about the holocaust and the only thing I could think of was how sick a person would have to be mentally for them to want to try and extinguish entire races, religions and lifestyles of people. It physically makes me ill to think that there are people out there that think that humans should not be considered a person with feelings and a personality and a reason to be alive.

This brings me back to my sex trafficking mindset. I am so interested in helping different organizations to help bring these victims out of there shackles of a terrible life and help them slowly regain a normal life. It makes me very outraged that there are people that don't value human life so much that they are willing to treat a human as if they are dirt. I cannot wait to get out there and jump right in to help these victims. I know this is a long post and it is something I honestly had no clue I would right about but it came over me at the last second and this is exactly what a blog is for right?

I will leave you with a few facts about human trafficking and human sex trafficking.:

  • There are over 27 million men, women and children enslaved.
  • One out of every three teenage runaways will be pulled into prostitution within the first 48 hours of being on the street because of no food, shelter, or money.
  • A pimp can make $150,000-$200,000 per child each year and the average pimp has 4 to 6 girls. (U.S. Justice Department, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children)
  • In many third world countries it is legal to sale family members in return for financial help or for safety.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
