25 Things I Wish I Knew Before Graduating High School

You are about to have the time of your life.

25 Things I Wish I Knew Before Graduating High School
Skylar Ray

This time a year ago I couldn't wait for the school year to be over. I knew nothing would ever be the same after I walked across that stage at graduation, but I was too excited to move on to the next chapter of my life. Little did I know how much I myself and everything I knew would be changing too.

Here I am now, a year later, with a whole new outlook on life. I have grown so much as a person and have gained so much from my first year doing actual, "adult things." There are so many things I wish I had known before I received my high school diploma and here they are.

1. Just because you succeeded in high school doesn't mean you'll succeed in college, or in life in general.

2. Most of the things you learned in high school will be useless to you in college.

3. You won't refer to your senior prom as the best night of your life after a few weekends in college.

4. Your high school friends might not always be there like you thought they would.

5. You might cry about leaving, but the sadness won't last for long.

6. All the things you stress about now will seem like nothing after you live on your own.

7. Dorm life isn't as cool as it seems, although you will meet some of the greatest people and friends there.

8. The assignments you are given in high school are nothing compared to the ones you're about to take on in college.

9. Time really does fly by, even after high school.

10. You are about to learn so much about yourself.

11. People in college don't care about what you wear or how much makeup you have on.

12. Your education is worth so much more than you think.

13. High school years are not the best years of your life.

14. Don't try to impress people.

15. Saving money is valuable.

16. Hug your family members as much as you can.

17. You'll miss your family more than you could ever imagine.

18. You'll miss your dogs too... And your friends.

19. Meet new people!

20. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

21. Learn how to do things on your own.

22. Be your own person.

23. Take pictures.

24. Be thankful.

25. Make memories and enjoy every second of your time at home.

In a year you'll be looking back on your senior year and wondering where the time went. You'll be a new person and everything will seem different and that's ok. Change is a good thing. College is hard, but it is so worth it. You are about to have the time of your life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
