We've all been there. We have lived with a few good ones and a few not so good ones, and yes, I'm talking about roommates. Over the past four years I have been living in a house full of girls and each year they're all different. With my experience and overall observation, I can basically decipher a good roommate versus a bad roommate. If you can honestly check off everything on this list, not only are you the best roommate a college kid could ask for, I need your number so we can configure a living situation ASAP!
With all jokes aside, I have provided a list of twenty-four things that make you the best roommate in the house. So honestly in order for people in the house to like you more, you should do the following things:
1. Clean up after yourself
2. Walk softly upstairs, nobody likes lead feet
3. Take out the trash
4. Help load and unload the dishwasher
5. Ask our roommates before having friends over
6. Take your clothes out of the dryer so your roommate doesn't have to throw your stuff on the floor
7. Change the toilet paper roll
8. Buy (or offer to help buy) household items for a change
9. Clean your hair off the shower walls and pull that hairball out of the drain
10. Throw away your rotten leftovers
11. Pay your bills on time
12. Park sensibly based on you and your roommates' schedules
13. Respect your roommates' privacy
14. Clean the entire house or apartment at least once a week
15. Take turns cleaning the bathroom
16. Do your dishes right after you're finished eating
17. Turn off the lights when you leave
18. Don't jack up the thermostat or mess with it...unless there is a general consensus
19. Flush the damn toilet
20. Leave a plate of cookies and a nice note for your roommates occasionally
21. Avoid leaving post-its or passive aggressive whiteboard notes...text your roommates directly or confront them in person
22. Be the clean roommate but not the OCD roommate
23. Respect your roommates' ideas, opinions, and pet peeves
24. Most importantly though, leave no trace
After reading this if you feel like you're slacking a little bit, there is no need to worry. There is always a chance to start fresh right now. Feel free to go home and wow your roomies with some random acts of kindness and a little bit of a deep clean.
