Since the year 2000, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore have brought laughter and tears, but more importantly taught valuable life lessons. "Gilmore Girls" is a comedy-drama series that aired for seven seasons, but I didn't start to watch it until after it ended when reruns played every day. My mom and I watched it repeatedly and fell in love with the characters, Stars Hollow, and the story. It is truly my comfort show, so for those who have seen "Gilmore Girls" or for those who have not, I share all the Gilmore lessons with you.
1. It’s OK to wallow.
Life is hard and you don’t need to ignore your problems. Feel free to cry, stay in bed, eat ice cream, and you just might feel better.
2. No family is “perfect.”
Families are unique. They argue, fight, and even stop talking to each other.
3. But you should appreciate them anyways.
Whether they’re family by blood or those people in your life that care for you immensely, never take them for granted. They’re the ones who will cheer you on, make you laugh, comfort you, and be there always.
4. It’s OK to not have everything figured out.
Take your time, you’ll get there.
5. In omnia paratus.
This means “ready for anything.” Take chances and hope for the best. People can live a hundred years without really living for a minute.
6. A friend can turn into more.
The best person in your life can end up being the love of your life. You just have to let it happen.
7. How to appreciate literature, music, and movies.
There isn’t an episode that goes by that the Gilmores don’t reference some actress, band, or book. I always wish I had as much cultural knowledge as they do!
8. Witty banter is key!
Quick comebacks are absolutely necessary. Remember “life’s short, talk fast.”
9. Food is just…it’s amazing.
I wish I could eat what these girls eat without feeling sick! Their ability to eat pizza, tater tots, Pop-Tarts, chicken nuggets, and ice cream in one sitting is admirable.
10. You aren’t a horrible person if you are sick of people.
It happens to the best of us, sometimes people are just not the best.
11. When something makes you happy, you must celebrate it.
Lorelai loves snow and even though others do not, she doesn’t let it discourage her joy.
12. Needing your parents is completely OK.
Your parents, grandparents, aunts,
13. Live off of puns and bad jokes.
Say them even if others don’t laugh, if you think you’re funny, then you’re funny!
14. Say what you feel and take charge.
If you know what needs to be done, go do it!
15. You will make mistakes, this is inevitable.
Everything will be OK as long as you try again and make up for what happened.
16. Loving your home is important.
Where you come from is significant and no matter your travels, it will always be there to see you off and welcome you back.
17. Reading is the best.
A good book can make life better, there’s no doubt about that.
18. Being intelligent is more important than looks.
Being smart and working hard will pay off.
19. Surround yourself with people who care.
There are just some people who will willingly care for you no matter what and that’s important.
20. Coffee, coffee, coffee.
That’s all that needs to be said.
21. Remember to be grateful and thank the people in your life.
They got you to become the person you are today.
22. Overthinking is OK and often needed.
Get all those crazy thoughts out!
23. Mother-daughter relationships are so special.
I am so grateful for the bond I have with my mom and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
