2016's Life Lessons So Far
Ally Herr

This morning, I woke up with the sudden realization that 2016 is more than halfway over. And it feels like I have officially accomplished nothing. The sudden weight of the oncoming school year added to the weight of wanting to achieve goals that seem less and less possible as time rushes past you, ultimately creates a sense of panic and overall dissatisfaction with your being. And while delusions of grandeur are never good, neither are delusions of incompetence. We as beings are not blessed with the ability of objective introspection, but we are gifted with decent observational skills. So here's a few thoughts where, in the words of the great King Kylie people are just "realizing stuff."

1. The increase of police brutality and overt/covert racism coming to light has definitely forced younger people to become more involved, active and aware of society.

While this entire issue is something that shouldn't even exist, it's nice to see more people taking a stand on current issues.

2. This Presidential election is a bit of a mess, what with all the extreme standpoints, scandals and basically a lot of corruption being exposed.

It is incredibly depressing to see just how flawed our nation is, both in system and power, but at least the public knows of it now.

3. People, especially celebrities, are never what they seem.

Do not idolize people, because the ability to put on a facade and act like something you're not is easily done. We will never know celebrities because, regardless of how close we feel to them, we've never met them. Do not assume everything based on reputation.

4. Things are easily twisted in media.

This is an obvious thing, but it feels even more prevalent now. One specific case is not reflective of the entirety. There are going to be radical ideas no matter what is concerned, but it's important that we keep in mind the true meaning and overall being of the subject matter.

5. Everything we do is of our own choice.

Once again, this is incredibly obvious, but it really sunk in for me in the last seven months. It's all our own decision. People will influence you, they will offer their ideas. But you are your own person. Never feel pressured to do as others would.

6. The future, is at once unpredictable, uncontrolled and unknown.

But on the other side, it's entirely open. Anything is possible. Fear of the future is an irresistible tendency, and it's incredibly important for us to just focus on our passions. Concern for what could go wrong is something we must leave behind in order to move forward in our interests.

7. We are small.

It is more important for us to learn to be more selfless than we naturally are. What matters so much more is the goodness of the earth as a whole. Stand for things because others will be more positively affected even if it causes a loss to you personally.

Seven inspirational quotes for seven months. Basically, even if you feel as though this year has so far been wasted, see this, and realize that you did learn and therefore you also grew. To grow is to live, and on a lot of levels, that's more important than whether or not you've finished your summer reading assignment.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
