It is July 2016, just one, short month away from the Presidential Election. Just by getting on social media, I am quickly overwhelmed with all the Twitter fights and debates, which cloud my judgment of getting correct information that will help me select the right person to govern our country. Because of Twitter, we are too focused on Donald Trump's petty memes and do not realize what is at stake for our country. We need to make a difference and carefully decide who will become the next president of the United States of America. While we consider our views, values, and beliefs, we also need to put them in perspective with the two candidates. We need to stop publicizing Hillary Clinton jokes to get attention.
Don't get me wrong, social media is a good outlet for getting information fast, but it is only distracting and driving us away from the truth. We assume everything on Facebook is true, one-sided arguments do not allow us to see both perspectives, and a majority of Americans hop on the bandwagon, just so that they are less of a target for harassment or judgment.
I researched a little about the election, and how social media has an effect on us, the voters. Marissa Lang, from the San Francisco Chronicle, quoted in one article that social media's influence "is stronger in this election than it has ever been." With the newer technology, and social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat, candidates can quickly deliver news by a simple statement or comment. Despite our attempts to believe and rely on a candidates statement, we tend to be influenced more and more by opinionated statements. Often times we see Twitter memes of Trump, altered pictures, and even political satires, all of which publicize these issues in a false way.
To me, the 2016 election is just a social media event. My Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even Tumblr feed is full of hatred towards both Hillary and Trump. The only sayings I have been hearing is "Make America Great Again" and "Feel the Bern." This election will truly change history, and we have people that do not care.
I am definitely not going to state who I am going to elect, but let's just take a second and compare the candidates.
Hillary Clinton plans to decrease the amount of individuals in American prisons which just happens to be a major problem in many ethnic communities. Just as she is taking a stand with criminal justice, she is making known all of the world's genders, ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations; this will without a doubt strengthen not only our society, but our economy too.
Donald Trump supports the military and its veterans.
"It is a national embarrassment that an illegal immigrant can walk across the border and receive free health care and one of our veterans that has served our country is put on waiting list and gets no care."
Trump also wants to lower the unemployment rate, and to do this, he "plans" to take back jobs from foreign countries. He is a business man, having many failures and successes, but with that, he is still tackling a multitude of lawsuits.
I will agree that it is hard to form an unbiased, or unwavering opinion in our society, but it is the only way to get to a decision. All we have to do is find credible, honest information and take this election seriously, no matter what social media portrays.
