The Election

Society's reaction to the election and what will come about in our country if we don't change.

Dear America,

The year is 2016 and we have just had one of the most historical presidential elections. President Elect Donald Trump has won over Hillary Clinton. Many of the citizens don't agree with this new president elect, but I believe everyone has the right to their own opinion.

I just had a discussion about the election results in one of my classes. Everyone was able to express their thoughts about the election and I could hear some people getting frustrated or annoyed that we were "wasting class time." The last time I checked college is about more then just sitting in a class room discussing information from a textbook. Us students need to learn about the real world and the issues that come along with it. When we become adults we will want to look back and believe that we got all we could out of our education. It upset me that people didn't want to discuss the election.

Now people are rioting. They don't think President Elect Trump deserves the position. People are surprised all this chaos is happening, but I'm not. Whenever a president who has held the position for two terms has to leave, everyone is scared. They are scared of the unknown, scared of the change, and scared that the country is in the hands of a new leader. Yes, it is scary, but change isn't always bad. President Elect Trump hasn't even been in office yet and people are already setting him up to be a terrible leader. Shouldn't we want to grow as a country? Shouldn't we support our new leader and want him to succeed? Someone in my class even said, "If he falls, we all fall." And it's scary, but true. We need to step up and stop trying to destroy our new leader, but encourage him.

America was once motivated by change and new ideas. I believe that Donald Trump is also motivated by those two things. He has ideas and I hope he achieves what he said he would. I've watched the debates, the election, and the speeches. I've tried to learn about both parties before deciding who to vote for. I'll be the first to admit that I am certainly not a political expert, but I am trying to be informed. I know for certain that not talking about the election and the results will not make the issue go away. Try to be well informed. Have an open mind about things. Give people a chance. Congratulations, America, because you have a new president.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
