Let me start off this article by saying, I am the last person to know anything about politics, but I read an article this week and I was enraged, to say it lightly. I was doing my daily routine of scrolling on BuzzFeed today, and I happened to see an article that caught my eye. It was titled “Mississippi Governor Signs Sweeping Anti-LGBT Bill Into Law.” I bet you can see where I’m going with this. So, I read the article because I was interested in getting a laugh out of an idiot who clearly is stuck in the 1950s. The article talked about how Gov. Phil Bryant signed into law a bill that basically in plain English discriminates against all LGBT people. Are you joking? It's 2016.
The House Bill 1523 that passed protects people, religious organizations and certain businesses that refuse services due to their religious opposition to same-sex marriage, so basically it “protects” people who are scared of LGBT people. And I say “protects” with quotations because it sounds like the bill is protecting them from flesh eating zombies, but the LGBT individuals they are protecting them from are people, too, with feelings and emotions just like they have. The bill also “protects” those opposed to recognizing the gender identity of transgender people. So, if you weren't already shocked, let me hit you with another thing the bill does. It covers those who do not want to help LGBT people with counseling, foster care, adoption services, medical treatment, housing, employment and much more. Basically, the governor is saying that if you don't like LGBT people, it's totally fine to refuse to help them or provide any type of service to the LGBT community if you just don't want to. I’m sorry, but what??
This is America, where people should be equal, not discriminated against based on gender identity or who they love. As stated on BuzzFeed, Rep. Stephen Holland said last week that “This is the most hateful bill I have seen in my career in the legislature. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You are doing nothing but discrimination.” And it’s as simple as that. Many people for this bill argued that they see no problem with it and that it doesn't take rights away from anyone, which is true in a sense, but anyone with a heart would see that it 100 percent does. It takes away the right for people to accept themselves for who they are, and the right of being yourself.
