With the internet culture blowing up this year like never before, it seems like every week there's a new slang word popping up into conversation without ever being explained. Do you have FOMO? Maybe you'd like to always be in the know with your bae. Or perhaps you're just trying to avoid acting salty. Fear no more, your guide to all things 2015 linguistically speaking is here. Read on for a definition of everything I've just mentioned—and a little bit more.
FOMO: Fear of Missing Out
Have you ever seen a photo that a friend posted on Instagram or Facebook, only to wish you had been invited? Then you've got a case of FOMO. Do you worry that all your friends are hanging out without you? Then you've got a serious case of FOMO. In today's post-heavy culture, having FOMO is even more prevalent, as everyone tends to post what they're doing and where they are at all times. The best way to avoid suffering from FOMO is to be out all the time. Stop going to work, stop sleeping, and just keep staying out so you never miss a thing. It's the only way!
Bae: Before Anyone Else
Popularized by artist Pharrell's 2014 song, "Come Get It, Bae," this word has actually been going strong since last year, but not everyone actually knows what it means. While used as a term of endearment, most people assume that bae is short for "babe" or "baby," ever-popular terms of endearment. 'Bae' is a way of saying that someone is your number one, and they will always come before anyone else in your life. Awww, how sweet.
Salty: The Opposite of Sweet
Do you ever find yourself acting a little bit upset over something that's happened? Are you perhaps feeling bitter lately? Then you've been acting salty. Anytime you feel yourself frustrated beyond comparison in a situation and fight back with your words or actions, you are proven to be salty. Sometimes the best way to fight feeling this way is to just take a good old-fashion nap. That's all you can do.
AF: Like, REALLY, Something (As F**K)
'AF' is a short and sweet way to add emphasis when describing something. Is it beyond hot outside? It's hot AF. Was that test you just took the most difficult test you've ever taken? It was difficult AF. This article is cool AF. You get the picture.
YAAAAS: Yes. VERY YES.
If something is literally so incredible that your shouting, "YES!" doesn't even begin to cover the excitement, then 'YAAAAS' is for you. The more A's you add, the more excited you are. Sounds simple enough, right? YAAAAAAAS!
Obviously, this is just a small sampling of all of the latest slang that's been floating around in cyberspace. There's so much more out there, and it's changing every day! It's incredible how fast our language evolves over time, and how much of it is purely situational. In a couple of years, this list will be outdated and overrated AF. I'll probably be feeling pretty salty about it.
