20 Times Pitch Perfect Was Extremely Relatable To A Capella Singers

The widely successful movie series, Pitch Perfect, has created a new life for A capella. Suddenly, the idea of making music strictly with the sheer vocal talent of individuals is inspiring, impressive, and dare I say, cool. But these groups have been around for a while now (mine since 1984- and yes, they mostly sang Madonna songs) and watching the movies having been a part of this community provides a whole new lens. Pitch Perfect is far from fiction... in fact, it is a documentary of my life. And here are 20 times that I watched Pitch Perfect and thought, "Oh my god... that's us."

1. Remember in Pitch Perfect 2 when Flashlight was sung about a million times and you felt like you wanted to strangle that freshman girl if she sang it once more? Yeah, that's how all arrangements get... quickly.

2. And sometimes, people in the group have less than favorable ideas (an A capella rendition of a Drake song? No thank you).

3. You quickly realize that A capella boys are way smoother on stage...

4. ...than off.

5. Sometimes members of other groups like to let you know how you could improve.

6. But most of the time it's just a little friendly competition.

7. Inter-A capella dating is real. Very real.

8. Everyone in the group may or may not have had any friends before they joined.

9. But everything seems to make sense when you're on stage.

10. Odds are, you've seen everyone in your group naked (or pretty close to it) and it was totally normal. In fact, you're probably closer because of it.

11. And initiating new members is not any less dramatic than the movie implies.

12. A capella-only parties do exist and they're just as you would expect them to be (lots of intoxicated singing, but beautiful intoxicated singing).

13. When you travel to other groups, they can be a little cocky.

14. Then you show them how it's done and it usually shuts them up.

15. You get really excited watching other groups perform because you truly understand the complexity in an arrangement.

16. Your whole group often has accidental, synchronized dance moves.

17. You're constantly building up each other's self esteems.

18. But you're also the first to point out each other's flaws.

19. You will get in fights with every other member of the group.

20. But at the end of the day, you're an actual family.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
