20 Thoughts You Have While Getting All Your Hair Cut Off

Just recently I had a hair appointment scheduled that was originally going to be just a trim and a color touch-up. But at about ten o'clock the night before I decided I wanted a pixie cut. This was an idea I'd been kicking around for a few years now, always with the intention of getting it done eventually, even just to try it, but I had never worked up the courage before. But I was ready for a change, and I had a hair appointment already scheduled, so I thought why not go ahead and take the plunge? I sat in the salon chair and told my stylist I wanted to go full chop, and she said she thought it was a great idea, but I needed to be prepared for daily styling and more frequent haircuts. We talked it over, went over maintenance, looked at some pictures, and I decided to go for it. After repeatedly asking me if I was sure I wanted to do it, she broke out the scissors. Here's what my internal monologue sounded like.

1. Yes, I'm sure I want to do this. Totally sure.

2. She's about to cut off my ponytail and I'm feeling a little less sure.

3. Well, it's done. No turning back now.

4. It's a little weird watching my hair pile up on the floor around me.

5. My neck feels cold. I'm used to having a curtain there.

6. And more hair comes off. And more hair comes off. And more hair comes off.

7. It's like this salon chair is sitting in the middle of a hair snowdrift.

8. I'm feeling a little light-headed. Literally.

9. Just when I think she's finished trimming one section, she goes in and takes some more off.

10. What if I've just made a horrible mistake?

11. I guess now's not the time to be asking that question.

12. Aw, forget it, it's just hair. Worse comes to worst, it'll grow back.

13. I've always admired girls who are brave enough to get all their hair chopped off. Now that's me!

14. I'm going to look like Tinker Bell. It's going to be awesome.

15. I guess Tinker Bell actually has a bun...well, same principle I guess.

16. It's so weird to not have hair hanging around my face. Is this how guys feel all the time?

17. I guess I look a little like my brother, now that I think about it...that's weird. Let's not go down that road.

18. Pre-blow drying, this looks disturbingly like old-school Justin Bieber's hair.

19. I hope I can do what she's doing on my own.

20. Well if nothing else, I can now officially say I had the guts to get a pixie cut!

It took a little while for the shock to wear off, but I love my new hair. If you're considering going super short but you're afraid to take the leap, go for it! If nothing else you can say you did it, and found out definitively if you like it instead of just always wondering.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
