Whether these comments and questions are from uncles, grandmas, moms, friends, or professors, we are just tired of hearing them. We usually dread hearing these words and don't want to have conversations about them. We're in college, plain and simple. We're here to get a degree, but also to be the young twenty-somethings that we are. Here are 20 things that college students would rather not hear:
1. Aren't you going to have so much debt after you graduate?
Why yes, yes I am, but please tell me how else I could have gone to college without student loans? Would you like to help me pay them off?
2. Why don't you get a job on campus?
Even as a student who was able to get Federal Work Study, I still could not find a job on campus. Literally every student wants a job on campus and there just aren't too many available. Don't make me feel bad about it, it's not as easy as you think.
3. You didn't get any scholarships?
Sorry to break it to you, but all those scholarship websites don't work for most people. Unless you got a perfect SAT score or could play on a division 1 team, most of us don't get too many large scholarships.
4. All college students just drink and party but most of you aren't even 21.
Wow, I didn't know I wasn't 21, thanks for letting me know! It's college, calm down. Just because we occasionally drink does not mean we're going to end up as alcoholics. And I'm pretty sure you had your first drink before you turned 21 too.
5. Can you make a lot of money with that major?
Or, my favorite: Will you be able to find a job in that field?
A lot of people in my generation aren't going into careers just because they want to make money. For some people, it's about a little more than a paycheck. Like: Am I going to be happy going to work every day? Am I helping people or doing well for my community? Am I passionate about my career? Am I good at this?
6. You want to go for your masters too?
How many more years is that?
A lot of jobs nowadays require at least a master's degree, so yes, I'm thinking about putting myself through another 2 years of school if that means I can have a better future.
7. Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet?
Do not ask this question unless I bring it up first.
8. Are you getting enough sleep?
The answer to this question is always no. Why do you think I love naps so much now?
9. Did you gain the Freshman 15?
If you feel the need to ask me this, you're probably already assuming that I did, so don't insult me with this question.
10. Attendance is mandatory and counts towards your grade.
Ugh.
11. Are you studying abroad? Now is the time to travel.
I'd love to, but I don't have an extra thousand of dollars laying around anywhere so, no probably not. Wanna pay for it?
12. What's in that red cup in your facebook picture?
What do you think is in that red cup? Chocolate milk?
13. The final is cumulative.
No. No. No. You are the devil himself!
14. You've been watching way too much Netflix.
#bye.
15. Are you going to join a sorority/fraternity?
Are you?
16. The textbook is required for this class.
Excuse me professor, but I cannot buy the textbook as I have run out of money from buying my other 4 required textbooks and paying tuition to go here. Do you happen to have $150 you could lend me? Oh, and you wrote the book?
17. Have you been following the election?
As a millennial, you should be worried about our government.
Yes, I have been and I am worried. I'm also grossly embarrassed for America. Don't ask me about politics again.
18. Are you going to unpack anytime soon?
19. You cannot retake the test under any circumstances.
Really? Any circumstances? That's just cruel.
20. Did you just nap for six hours?
Yes, I did... and it was the time of my life.
