20 Thank Yous For My Freshman Roommate
Courtney Kost

Freshman year is a scary time, and my experience was no exception. I’m 90 percent sure the only reason I made it through is because of my roommate. Who knew going random could end so well? Everyone deserves to hear a thank you every once in a while, especially from someone who helped you adjust to a life away from home. Shout out to my freshman partner in crime, and all other dynamic duos out there.

1. Thank you for showing me how to sign up for classes and showing me that I actually had a school email account. I had absolutely no idea what was going on the summer before college. I honestly don’t think that I would have made it to college if it weren’t for you.

2. Thank you for taking care of me while I was sick or in a bad mood. I wouldn't have survived my canker sores last year without you. Doctor Emma to the rescue!

3. Thank you for reminding me what innocence and a pure heart truly is, I hadn’t seen that in a while.

4. Thank you for putting up with all of my meltdowns, whether they were because of a boy, school, a loved one passing away, or anything else that happened. It doesn't take much for me to lose it, and you always stayed by my side.

5. Thank you for loving my pink chair as much as I did, if not more.

6. Thank you for listening to "Smang It" and watching all of the ridiculous videos I would show you because I thought they were hilarious. I know how uncomfortable they all made you, and I loved every second of it.

7. Thank you for keeping me around when sometimes I think it’s a complete disadvantage to you.

8. Thank you for blasting "The Lion King" soundtrack on repeat. Hakuna Matata is very well-needed at all times.

9. Thanks for picking up some of my potty mouth. It made me feel a lot better about my vibrant choices of words.

10. Thank you for usually staying out with me, even when I knew you wanted to go back home.

11. Thank you for welcoming me into your family. Whether that was a blanket from Mom, a dinner with Dad, or an update about your sister.

12. Thank you for forcing me to wash my bedsheets. Having clean sheets never felt so good.

13. Thank you for actually trying to live with me for another year. I know it didn’t work out, but the fact that you were willing to meant the world to me.

14. Thank you for helping to plan my birthday surprise with the third member of our trio. That was honestly the nicest thing that anyone has ever done for me.

15. Thank you for staying up late with me to talk about whatever was on my mind.

16. Thank you for watching throwback movies, and for actually liking them as well. Everyone needs some "Lizzie McGuire" and "High School Musical" in their life every once in a while.

17. Thank you for being in every single group I ever had to be in, including our orientation and STAR group. It was always really nice to have someone who you knew.

18. Thank you for helping me realize that maybe I don’t have the worst luck because I got stuck with a roommate like you. Before, I thought my future was going to be like this…

19. Thank you for helping to make a mark on Cobeen Room 826. We will never forget all of the good times we had.

20. Thank you for helping me to get through the most wondrous, frightening, and stressful year of my life. We did it!

Moral of the story is, for once in my life the world worked in my favor by pairing me with you. It was a match made in heaven, and I know that because of circumstance we don’t see each other as often this year. You deserve a big thank you for everything that you’ve done for me. Love you all the way from Straz to Mashuda.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
